    Compassionate care, but staffing issues

I appreciated the respect, dignity and family-like compassion here - staff supported us during the vigil, the RN handled meds, meals were served three times daily (breakfast tailored), rooms were generally clean and there's no "nursing-home" smell. However, chronic understaffing, some untrained or verbally abusive workers, lapses in hygiene and food quality (even out-of-date items), inconsistent room cleaning and management/state investigation concerns - plus the cost - mean I'd recommend this place cautiously and with close oversight.

    About Woodland Place

Woodland Place Inc., sitting right in Gadsden, AL, is a small senior care community with 16 units, and it aims to offer a supportive and warm environment for older adults. The place provides several levels of care, so you'll see assisted living, independent living, dementia care, and memory care, as well as short-term respite stays for caregivers who need a bit of relief. Residents here get personalized help with things like bathing, dressing, eating, managing medicines, and moving around, whether they need a little or a lot of help. There's 24-hour supervision and staff available for emergencies, medication management, and coordinating with healthcare providers, including support for diabetic care and incontinence care, and even non-ambulatory care. Meals come prepared each day in the dining room, and residents get nutritious, balanced food meant to support their health, with vitamins and minerals worked in, and there's help for those who need special diets. Rooms come furnished, with phone lines and WiFi, and shared indoor common areas make it easy for people to get together and talk or join in an activity, and you'll find laundry and housekeeping taken care of so living spaces stay clean and comfortable.

Community life gets a lot of attention, with daily scheduled activities, movie nights, devotional times, outings to see local attractions, and walking paths and gardens for anyone who wants fresh air or a bit of exercise. Staff arrange transportation for medical appointments and errands, and there's always someone to help with getting to doctors if that's needed. Woodland Place tries to help residents keep as much independence as possible, so the staff work from a social model of care, supporting residents in doing what they can for themselves, but stepping in when needed. There's a focus on supporting people emotionally and socially, so residents can join arts and crafts, exercise classes, or just spend time with friends. Amenities include cable, emergency alert systems, on-site hair services, and simple things like linens and moving help. Apartments and private units are available, with most of the common areas shared among residents, and there's a feeling of a small, close-knit community where it's easier to get to know folks and build new friendships, and that really helps make the place feel like home for most people who live there.
