    Bright campus, pricey, verify management

I love the bright, homey campus - spacious, clean apartments with gorgeous views, lovely gardens, great meals, lots of activities, and capable skilled-nursing backup; the frontline staff I've met are caring and often go above and beyond. However, management can be unresponsive, I've seen or heard about staff mistreatment and admin disorganization, and the community is pricey with a large buy-in. For my mom's comfort and safety it's worked well, but I'd recommend a careful tour, ask about incident handling and costs, and get clear written answers before you commit.

    About Redstone Village

Redstone Village sits on 114 acres in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, overlooking the Tennessee River, so you've got a pretty view to wake up to every morning, and the air feels quiet and calm most days, which a lot of folks seem to enjoy, especially since the place offers independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, and even rehabilitation services all on the same property. The community keeps things simple for folks 55 and up and has a program called Select for those who want independent living, without any kind of big buy-in, so you don't have to worry about tying up your savings. Living here means you'll find options-like floor plans for independent apartments or rooms for assisted living and skilled nursing-that make things easier as your needs change, and you don't have to leave if you need more care, which gives a fair amount of peace of mind for the future.

Meals are included, and the dining room has different menu choices, including vegetarian options, and you can even get your meals delivered to your room; sometimes you'll find yourself eating just once or twice a day in the main dining spots if you like to cook for yourself, but most folks stick to the meal plan, which is made by a full culinary staff. Social life is full, thanks to things like art classes, yoga, water aerobics, Wii bowling, and regular music and community service programs, and there's always something going on, from wine tastings to cooking lessons, so you don't have to sit around feeling bored. The activity director keeps up a busy calendar, and a lot of activities are meant to help your mind and body, not just fill time, and there are devotional services on-site and off if faith's important to you.

You'll see a lot of focus on safety, both in the everyday sense-with a 24-hour staff, nurses on staff and a doctor on call, and a 24-hour call system for emergencies-and for memory care, where there's a dedicated, secured building for folks who tend to wander, even with things like bracelets that sound an alarm if someone gets too close to the door. The community is wheelchair and walker friendly, and there are lots of ramps, lifts, and showers set up for accessibility, plus transportation if you need to run errands or make it to appointments.

Redstone Village is run as a not-for-profit with local management, and Greenbrier Senior Living is the managing partner, so decisions get made by people with ties to the area and to the people who live there. There's a big emphasis on independent and active living-gardens to enjoy, game rooms, a fitness room with regular classes, a swimming pool, business room, and a resident-run activities program, along with outdoor walking paths with pretty mountain and river views.

If your health shifts, there's help available for bathing, dressing, medication management, physical rehab, insulin or injections, and lifts for moving in and out of bed or chairs, while those with Parkinson's or other memory needs can get care from staff who've been trained for these needs, and there are hospice services, too. You can bring a dog or cat with you, and allow guests when you like, and there's parking for residents. For folks needing extra legal help or medical attention, there are connections to elder law attorneys, veteran's services, hospitals, rehab centers, disease-specific support groups, and Medicare specialists, so you don't have to hunt for help on your own.

Apartments and villas have air conditioning and phones, and everything's designed to be as maintenance-free as possible, so you have time to explore a new hobby or take part in something in the community if you want. The village doesn't feel like a big commercial place-there's care and attention to how things work, and the idea is you can age in place among friends, keep your pets with you, and spend your days in a way that fits who you are and what you like.
