    Compassionate care, costly with caveats

I placed my mom here and was impressed by the compassionate, hands-on caregivers and dedicated management (an RN owner) who provided one-on-one attention in an immaculate, home-like setting. Meals are freshly prepared three times daily with pleasant aromas and family-style dining, medical needs are closely monitored with doctor visits at home, and hospice support and quick responses are available when needed. Staff were responsive, respectful, and engaging-residents enjoy walks, bingo and a bright, clean atmosphere. Drawbacks: high move-in cost and unclear refund terms, occasional food/activity preferences not met and rare staff lapses, so weigh the cost/terms against the strong personal care.

About A Place Called Home Residential Care

A Place Called Home Residential Care sits in Clovis, California, not far from parks, coffee shops, and the Clovis Community Hospital Surgery Department, so families don't have to worry much about being too far from help or a nice place to visit. The facility is family-owned and nurse-operated, and it stays focused on safety and comfort for people needing assisted living, memory care, or hospice care, all in a residential home-like setting with elegant decor, high ceilings, and gardens. There's a mix of private bedrooms and private bathrooms, and the place only allows up to six residents at a time, so the care stays personal, with a staff-to-resident ratio of about one to three.

The staff includes registered nurses and health professionals who help with medication management, diabetic care, Parkinson's care, Alzheimer's and dementia care, hospice, and even high-acuity needs. The staff speaks English and stays awake at night, so residents get 24-hour supervision. Some staff specialize in managing memory loss; the memory care program is set up in a secure, purpose-built part of the home with alarms, secure doors, and a computerized wander alert system that uses bracelets to notify staff if someone tries to leave an unsafe area, which works well for people who wander or have dementia. Residents have visiting services from a podiatrist, dentist, doctor on call, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, and there are arrangements for hospice care.

Everyday help includes regular housekeeping, laundry, dry cleaning, and assistance with bathing, dressing, and getting around. They help with incontinence, reminders to use the restroom, and let people age in place as needs change. Residents eat homemade meals prepared for special diets, including diabetic and allergy-sensitive options. There are scheduled group meals in a dining room, and private rooms come furnished with phones and emergency alert systems.

People do a variety of activities, with outings to places like the library or senior center, social and educational programs, movie nights, and fitness groups. There's on-site and off-site devotional services, barber and beautician services, and indoor and outdoor common areas for socializing or just enjoying the garden. The grounds are tidy, with walking paths and parking for those who drive, and there are rules against indoor smoking in all spaces.

The facility allows both men and women residents, sometimes accepting only women depending on needs, and also supports short respite stays for those who need temporary care. Staff strive to encourage independence while offering as much help as needed, and they stick to flat-rate pricing to keep things simple. The place stays recognized for high quality care and customer satisfaction, and it's licensed for six beds under California License #107206601. The overall feel is that of a comfortable home with a luxury touch, nurse-led care, and strong attention to safety for people living with memory loss, movement issues, or frailty.
