    Warm staff but unsafe care

I'm torn: the staff at Hillview were warm, loving and family-like - great one-on-one rehab, knowledgeable therapists, lively activities and a beautiful therapy room/patio with big windows. However, coordination problems (missed doctor appointments, staff unpreparedness and a nurse often distracted/on her phone) led to inconsistent care and my mom's condition worsened. I appreciate the compassionate team and homey atmosphere, but because of those safety lapses I can't fully recommend it.

    About Hillview Convalescent Hospital

Hillview Convalescent Hospital is a small, for-profit skilled nursing facility with a corporate ownership structure, offering both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care services. With a total of 52 beds, it accommodates residents who require varying levels of medical and daily living assistance. The facility is not affiliated with a continuing care retirement community but is a participating provider in both Medicare and Medicaid programs, making it accessible to individuals with diverse financial situations.

The nursing staff at Hillview Convalescent Hospital delivers an average of 3 hours and 46 minutes of care per resident per day, ensuring consistency in coverage throughout the week, including weekends. This stability helps residents receive medical and personal care on a reliable basis. The facility maintains a focus on infection prevention as indicated by the provision of annual influenza vaccinations, which are received by all residents. The majority of residents are able to maintain their basic abilities for self-care such as moving, eating, and using the bathroom independently.

For residents recovering from hospital stays due to events like stroke, heart attack, or injury, Hillview Convalescent Hospital offers post-acute care aimed at supporting a safe return home or ongoing recovery. During short-term stays, 7.7% of residents required visits to the emergency room, underlining the facility’s vigilance regarding changes in health conditions. Long-term care residents benefit from attention to activities of daily living as well as access to specialized medical support when needed.

Recent inspection cycles have identified areas for improvement across a range of care and facility standards. Issues such as ensuring resident dignity, offering a homelike environment, and providing adequate supervision to prevent accidents have been noted. The facility has also addressed points related to timely assessments, confidentiality of medical records, safe food preparation, and the provision of pharmaceutical and respiratory services. Particular attention has been given to infection control protocols and the physical setup of resident rooms to meet comfort standards. While there have been several identified shortcomings, most have been associated with a low potential for harm and have affected a limited group of residents.

Despite these findings, Hillview Convalescent Hospital continues its commitment to resident care by responding to inspection recommendations and maintaining a stable nurse staffing structure. The facility’s dual participation in Medicaid and Medicare programs and average ratings for both short-term and long-term care reflect its role as an accessible option for individuals and families seeking rehabilitation and nursing services in a smaller, community-focused environment.
