    Beautiful facility, management and safety

I loved the beautiful, homey facility - sunny rooms, patios, lovely gardens and ramps that made outdoor spaces accessible. The hands-on caregivers were mostly kind, long-tenured and went above and beyond, and the place felt clean and not corporate. That said, management was often unresponsive and unprofessional, with unexplained fee increases and poor communication. Care staff looked overworked - we had problems: a rough caregiver, my mom was injured, the call system/emergency response felt unreliable, and personal items were misplaced. Rooms can be hot, musty and lack AC or modern heating in places. Activities and day trips were limited by the small size, so social stimulation was inconsistent. Overall it's a lovely, affordable spot with excellent grounds and many caring staff, but safety, maintenance and management issues left me wary.

    About Alexander Gardens

Alexander Gardens sits in Santa Barbara and you'll see right away it's in an older estate that a family donated to serve as an assisted living home which gives the whole place a cozy, almost bed-and-breakfast feel, and with just 30 beds folks tend to get more attention and care that's tailored to what each person needs, especially since the local owner spends about half the time on site making sure everything runs smoothly, and you'll notice the staff holds a good reputation for treating everyone with respect and dignity, so it's really more of a family-style environment than anything else. They offer both Assisted Living and Memory Care, including support for aging in place and hospice services when needed, which lets residents stay put as their needs change, and many folks appreciate knowing there's a 24-hour call system and constant staff support for safety and peace of mind, plus the option for private or semi-private rooms depending on what suits best. The daily schedule tends to be full, since there's a whole list of engaging activities like weekly flower design classes, movie nights, arts and crafts, a sensory integration program, and even community-sponsored events out front or in the courtyard, and you'll find the common areas comfortable, with plenty of places to sit, a game room, a library, fireplaces, TV lounge, and even a piano and organ for those interested in music. There's also a beauty salon and barber shop on site, raised garden beds and a butterfly garden by the patio if someone enjoys being outdoors, good walking paths, and an atrium for sunny days, plus things like free Wi-Fi, a meeting room, and a bistro café. They serve three chef-prepared meals a day, and the dining room offers all-day service with special dietary options as needed, and whether a person's there for longer-term living or short-term respite care, laundry and housekeeping are covered along with medication help, bathing, dressing, and whatever daily support someone might need. Folks age 55 and up are welcome to apply and with the all-inclusive approach, most needs-from transportation at cost or sometimes complimentary, to housekeeping, events, and care-are looked after, while still letting residents keep a sense of independence in a calm, compassionate setting. The California License #425801995 ensures they meet state standards, and everything about Alexander Gardens seems set up to help people feel at home, stay active, and enjoy a setting where friends can be made, and comfort and community come first.
