    Kind staff, clean but outdated

I chose this small, home-like place because the staff and owners are kind, patient and genuinely caring - I feel my loved one is in good hands. The building is old and a bit run-down but kept very clean, with bathroom safety features, an outdoor patio and low room costs. Programs and activities are minimal, meals are inconsistent (often poor), and there have been medication mix-ups that require daily oversight. Overall good personal care, but expect an older facility with limited programming and some accessibility issues.

    About Hanover Guest Home

Hanover Guest Home sits in the Banana Belt neighborhood of Santa Cruz and has helped seniors since 1983, staying with the same Belleza family running it for two generations now, and you'll notice the grounds are well cared for because the family matriarch puts a lot of work into them. This place has 15 licensed beds and can take up to 12 residents, so it stays small and home-like, which a lot of people find comforting, and the staff always keeps a watchful eye, day and night, to help with daily needs. The community gives assistance with dressing, bathing, medication, and meals, while also handling laundry and housework so no one has to worry about chores. Meals are served in a dining room, where residents can sit down together with dine-in and all-day dining, and the food is prepared with care, often local and aiming to fit different dietary needs, even for those with allergies or diabetes.

Hanover Guest Home covers a lot of care needs, since they have assisted living, independent living, memory care programs, nursing services, and long-term, non-acute care, plus respite care if someone just needs help for a short stretch. Nurses and other medical staff offer help with things like medication management, health visits, wound care, and even podiatry. The staff know how to help people who need wheelchair support or non-ambulatory care, and there's always someone around to support with walking, transfers, toileting, and grooming, so folks don't have to worry about getting along on their own. Residents get support from personal care assistants, and help with incontinence care, bathing, dressing, and just general daily tasks.

The setting feels like a home rather than a big institution, and most everyone can get around easily, whether walking or in a wheelchair. There's a game and activity room, walking paths, a garden, and a fitness center, so people don't get bored, and the staff plan social activities like movie nights, crafts, and education or wellness programs to keep minds and bodies moving. Residents can use salon and barber services right on site, and there's Wi-Fi and cable TV in the rooms, plus kitchenettes, emergency alert systems, and safety tools like sprinklers and handicap features. Everyone gets their room maintained and help is close by if anything goes wrong, and the family makes sure to keep things cheerful and friendly.

Transportation is available for appointments or outings, and guests can park when they visit. Memory care has its own supportive programs, geared for those who need a bit more attention and cues. Hanover Guest Home doesn't take Medicare but does accept long-term care insurance, and that can help with expenses for families planning for the future. Many people say the food is delicious and balanced, with the staff focusing on local flavors, and it's worth noting the community has been around for decades, which helps when you're looking for a place that's steady and knows how to care for elders. The familiar atmosphere and caring approach support not just the seniors living there but their families as well.
