    Good facilities, unsafe memory care

I want to be clear and brief: the apartments, grounds and food are excellent and some staff (the head nurse, intake person Kate, director) were kind and responsive - my mom settled in quickly. But beneath that facade we experienced understaffing, poor dementia training, humiliation and abuse by some nurses/staff, hidden wet sheets, medication mistakes, frequent UTIs, falls, ER visits and delayed family notifications; an Ombudsman review/other investigations followed. I cannot recommend this place for memory care - it was traumatic and not safe for my loved one.

    About Porter Place Retirement Community

Porter Place Retirement Community sits on a tree-lined street at 1001 E Yale Ave in South Denver, only about a block from Centura Health-Porter Adventist Hospital and surrounded by houses, shops, and places to worship, so there's always plenty nearby, and you'll see that the building's large, kept tidy, and the grounds have nice gardens where you can sit or walk if you like, and the views of the mountains are a welcome bonus for many residents who choose one of the spacious apartments. The place offers independent living for seniors who prefer a simple, hassle-free life, and they also have assisted living for those who need help with bathing, dressing, or remembering their medicine, and services come right to the apartments so everyone can feel at home in their own space. Porter Place provides memory care programs for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, with special spaces and routines, and they also run adult daycare for people who only need help during the day, which is handy for families who look after someone at home, plus caregivers can take a break with the respite care or get help with hospice if that's ever needed.

There's a clinic right on site, and nurses are available for 12 to 16 hours each day, with staff who stay awake overnight and a 24-hour call system, so someone's always around for emergencies or help moving from bed to wheelchair, for example, and they offer diabetes support like blood sugar checks, though residents need to give their own injections and manage any incontinence needs themselves, but the staff is known for being kind and attentive, with a cheerful spirit that makes the place welcoming for new folks. Residents enjoy three meals a day in the dining room-these are made with fresh ingredients, and there's always a vegetarian choice if that's wanted-plus you'll find lots of activities, computer classes, internet access, scheduled transport for errands or outings, and even guest apartments for visiting family or friends. Porter Place encourages residents to keep busy and stay involved, whether with indoor games, social events, group prayers at noon, or trips around town, and services fit different needs with a mix of light and medium care, though they don't specialize in heavier care.

Some apartments offer mountain views, and transportation and parking are close by, so people can come and go pretty easily, and the community stays busy with regular entertainment, classes, and excursions. There's help available for post-operative care and nurse visits in the house, and home care aids can help with things like keeping company or other daily tasks. Porter Place is affiliated with the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and they offer short devotional time and support for spiritual needs, with offsite services available too. The atmosphere leans toward being calm and social, with a focus on supporting everyone's independence as much as possible, and though there's always room for making staff training better, especially for dementia care, community members and visitors often mention the helpful, friendly approach from all who work here. Porter Place serves people over 55 and offers a range of health and social support, with different options to help seniors live well, and it's always worth a visit to see if it fits what you or your loved one might want.
