    Modern community, excellent staff, expensive

I toured this modern, very clean community and was genuinely impressed - the staff are fantastic: friendly, attentive, learn residents' names, and provide competent, caring support. The dining is excellent (delicious food, nice dining room, even private dinners), and my apartment had a full kitchen, but some units are small or semi-private. Downsides: the campus feels large and sprawling with limited amenities, many residents are elderly/wheelchair-bound, and the cost is high (about $14,000/month). Overall great staff and care, but not the right fit for me.

    About Cedar Mountain Commons

Cedar Mountain Commons sits on the Newington campus and offers both independent and assisted living in a not-for-profit senior community run by Hartford Hospital and Jefferson House, which makes it a bit unique since not many places are supported by a hospital this way around here, so you've got a service-rich environment with a focus on keeping your independence as much as possible, with trained staff who help you if you need things like medication monitoring and bathing, but otherwise let you live life the way you're used to, and if you want your own space there are studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments to choose from with plenty of maintenance services taken care of like plumbing, appliances, trash, snow, lawn and landscaping, so you're not doing all the chores you used to, and the housekeeping's handled, too. There's a dining service with fine meals, and a full calendar of social, cultural, and wellness activities, including GoodLife Fitness classes which are aimed at adult wellness and exercise. Residents get transportation and security around the clock, so there's peace of mind if anything comes up, and if something does go wrong, there's always staff available 24 hours a day and emergency call systems in every unit.

There's specialized Alzheimer's and dementia care programs in the assisted living area, with support for those who need more memory help, and the Center for Healthy Aging is there for seniors and family members who want advice or assessments. Short-stay respite care, adult day programs, and short-term rehabilitation are available, so sometimes folks come just for a short time to recover from a surgery or injury, or to give caregivers a break. Long-term care options are there, too, though skilled and intermediate care as you'd get in a nursing home isn't listed, but there are still a lot of health and support services due to the Hartford Healthcare connection, including things like social work, spiritual care, and access to care centers for cancer, musculoskeletal health, and others, with lots of different specialists available through the hospital system if you need them, so you'll always have medical resources nearby.

The whole place is run by a big team of about 330 employees and 95 volunteers where people take quality seriously and try their best to care for you like family, and the monthly fee covers most everything so there aren't a lot of extra bills popping up. All the activities and the care aim to keep everyone engaged and as independent as they want, whether that's going to the classes, attending events, or just enjoying the privacy of their apartment. There's a handy video tour online and floor plans to look at before you decide, and there's also a list of FAQs for folks to review if anything's not clear. Cedar Mountain Commons keeps the focus simple: meet you where you are, help you keep enjoying life, and make sure you've got support when you need it, without making things complicated.
