    Friendly staff, building needs updates

I'm very pleased overall - staff are decent, the chef is friendly and stops by, and management has updates underway. The building is older and showing wear (carpeting and common areas need replacement) and maintenance is ongoing. I do have concerns about the resident mix - many long-term, lower-income residents - which affects the atmosphere.

    About St Jude Common

St Jude Common sits in Norwich and offers a mix of independent and assisted living for frail elderly residents, and you'll see right away there's a gentle buzz about the place with friendly staff that are often described as helpful, joyful, and kind, which must make the building feel pretty welcoming day in and day out, and staff stay on-site around the clock to respond if there's ever an emergency. The facility has 50 to 51 one-bedroom apartments, each around 500 square feet and designed for folks who want to live in their own space but might need some extra help, with wheelchair-adapted units available and every apartment including a full bath, shower, refrigerator, electric range and oven, air conditioner and cable connections, and either a patio or balcony, plus there's ample closet space and a 24-hour emergency call system with security intercoms, which is important for peace of mind. Apartments sit inside a smoke-free, three and one-half story building with elevator access, so folks using wheelchairs or walkers can reach every area of the home, and rent covers all the basics like heat, hot water, electricity, and weekly housekeeping.

Chefs and meal planners at St Jude Common prepare nutritious meals each day, and if someone needs a special diet for diabetes or allergies, staff can handle that too, and residents usually eat together in the community dining room or in "The Stanley Room" if they want more formal dining, which can be a nice change. For recreation, there's a garden with a gazebo, landscaped walking paths, and a variety of indoor common areas, like a craft room, reading nook, arts room, cozy dining lounge, a recreation room, and an on-site barber and hairdresser for easy grooming days. Folks also join in for movie nights, social programs, and community-sponsored events, both at home and offsite, with a Residents Association that helps plan activities and encourages everyone to take part, because staying active matters for most people who live there.

St Jude Common offers board and care services, so staff support residents with daily hygiene, meals, medication management, and other personal care as needed, plus there's 24-hour supervision if someone needs closer monitoring, and trained aides can assist with non-medical needs for folks living at home. The community welcomes people of different religious backgrounds with devotional activities available, but it counts as a non-denominational facility. There's transportation and parking on site for those who want to go shopping or see the doctor, and amenities focus on making things easy, with a laundry room, scheduled laundry services, and move-in coordination when a new neighbor arrives.

The building is known for its wheelchair accessibility and several units are specially adapted, so those needing extra support won't have a hard time getting around, and the congregate housing model bridges independent living and assisted living by giving just enough help to keep life manageable without giving up privacy or independence. Folks there say the sense of community grows through shared activities, meals, and encouragement from staff and residents to look after each other. St Jude Common received recognition like the Best of Senior Living award for its care and support. People here can enjoy as much independence as possible while knowing someone's always around if they need help, and many find their days filled with a mix of social, educational, and wellness activities. There's a pre-application process and a waiting list, so people who want to live here need to plan ahead, and the facility focuses on seniors who have low to moderate incomes who wish to keep living as independently as possible within a supportive, friendly place.
