    Compassionate staff but serious shortcomings

I have mixed feelings about Riverchase. The building, rooms and residents are clean and roomy, and many staff - especially wound care nurse Shavon McCoy and director Lillian Howard - are compassionate, skilled and attentive; I saw clear improvements under Lillian. At the same time I experienced or observed serious problems: slow medical response, 4+ hour hospital transport delays, ran-out pain meds/no relief, heater failures, understaffing, poor communication and at times callous management; meals, laundry and rehab/activities were inconsistent. Overall, there are many excellent caregivers here, but I advise caution and confirmation of staffing and emergency/medication protocols before trusting long-term care.

About Riverchase Health and Rehabilitation Center

Riverchase Health and Rehabilitation Center sits over on Strong Road in Quincy, Florida, and has spent years serving folks from the community, and you'll find it's a place where people go for skilled nursing, all sorts of rehabilitation, and a calm, recovery-focused stay after surgeries or health issues, because the staff there works in shifts every hour and offers both long-term and short-term care options, covering everything from physical, occupational, and speech therapy to sober living and help with drug or alcohol detox when that's needed for some people. It also has medication-assisted treatment, and both outpatient and inpatient rehab services, which means someone can come in just during the day or stay around the clock, and they set up programs a little different for each person with an aim on getting folks back to living how they'd like by really focusing on what the patient needs both physically and emotionally, and even from a spiritual or social point of view if that's important to them. The place has a pretty good reputation, since it's been recognized through Joint Commission accreditation and has won a few awards, which you don't always see everywhere, though some say their experience is average, as shown in a 2.8 rating across a dozen reviews. A healthcare company called Gulf Coast Health Care owns it and Capitol Health Plan manages updates to their rules, and you see them making a point to explain mask rules to visitors and residents, letting them opt out unless there are clear risks, which shows they try to balance infection control without being too rigid, and you'll see similar flexibility for their employees unless someone is at unique risk or in a hazardous situation. The center provides both short-term rehabilitation and extended care, and you notice how the staff talks about care as a group effort, with loving caregivers and a big focus on keeping a nurturing environment for everyone, and besides that, their team often helps folks with transitional care, stepping down after a hospital stay, so people don't have to feel rushed. The place itself is quiet and relaxing, and the rehab programs sometimes push residents just enough to help them meet health goals and strengthen up, so while it doesn't claim to be a fancy place, it's somewhere that takes the job seriously, and that's been its focus for quite a while.
