    About Florida Baptist Retirement Center

Florida Baptist Retirement Center has a rich history that dates back to November 11, 1959, when it was chartered as an agency of the Florida Baptist State Convention in response to a growing need for senior ministry. The foundation of the center was laid in April 1960 with a generous donation of a homestead and 23 acres of land in Vero Beach by Walter and Elvira Buckingham. This pivotal contribution allowed the vision for a secure and enriching environment for senior adults to become a reality. Construction commenced later that year, culminating in the completion of the first phase in March 1961, when the initial residents were welcomed into their new home.

Over the following years, Florida Baptist Retirement Center expanded its facilities to serve the evolving needs of its community. By 1963, the addition of a congregate living facility enhanced the communal aspect of the center, while independent cottages were constructed to offer seniors more autonomy. In 1966, the blueprint for a skilled nursing unit marked a significant milestone, reflecting the commitment to providing comprehensive care. This next phase of development was realized in August 1968, when the nursing home opened its doors, introducing a new dimension of support and reinforcing the center’s dedication to comprehensive senior living.

The growth did not stop there. In 1992, a significant expansion saw the addition of 30 independent living villas and a 17-bed assisted living facility. This project represented the completion of the center’s original vision to offer a full continuum of care, ensuring residents could access the type and degree of support best suited to their needs.

Even after its sale on March 1, 2022, Florida Baptist Retirement Center has continued to provide a full spectrum of services to its residents. Today, the community offers 42 independent living units, a variety of studio and one-bedroom apartments, a 17-bed assisted living facility, and a 24-bed skilled nursing unit. The essence of the center’s history is grounded in its dedication to fostering a secure, uplifting, and Christian environment where senior adults can thrive independently, yet receive quality care as needed.

Florida Baptist Retirement Center’s mission remains rooted in compassionate service, making a tangible difference in the lives of residents, their families, and the dedicated staff. The center’s legacy and ongoing commitment are evident in its daily operations, emphasizing an environment where freedom, independence, and dignity are prioritized, while providing peace of mind through a continuum of quality care tailored to each individual.
