    About Skyland Trail

Skyland Trail is a nonprofit mental health treatment organization based in Atlanta, dedicated to helping individuals thrive as they recover from mental illness. With over 30 years of experience, Skyland Trail provides a holistic program that integrates evidence-based psychiatric treatment, comprehensive medical care, ongoing research, and a strong educational mission. Clients are welcomed through voluntary admission, whether referred by a mental health professional, organization, self, or family member. The program is designed with flexibility and graduated levels of support, ensuring that each individual receives appropriate care customized to their place on the path to recovery.

The admission process at Skyland Trail begins with a detailed assessment, forming the foundation for creating a personalized treatment plan. Upon admission, each client is assigned to a specialized multidisciplinary treatment team, which includes professionals with expertise in nutrition, vocational coaching, and integrated medical care. The availability of an onsite primary care clinic allows for collaboration with the clinical team, facilitating lab testing and specialized health assessments. Clients with co-occurring medical conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, receive coordinated onsite care as part of their therapeutic journey.

At Skyland Trail, the comprehensive approach supports both mental and physical health. Clients engage in structured therapeutic programming every weekday, typically participating in a diverse array of group sessions each hour. The programs are designed to strengthen both mind and body, offering nutrition and active living counseling alongside daily structured exercise groups. The experience extends beyond weekdays, with evenings and weekends filled with organized activities on campus and in the broader Atlanta community, such as visits to museums, sporting events, and local restaurants.

Adult and adolescent clients who participate in the residential program reside in private rooms with private bathrooms, ensuring privacy and comfort during their stay. The most intensive level of care available is residential treatment, with mental health day treatment—sometimes referred to as the partial hospitalization program (PHP)—offering a step-down or direct admission option. In day treatment, clients live at home while attending structured treatment at Skyland Trail Monday through Friday. The organization is committed to family engagement, offering weekly support and education groups at no cost, and, with client permission, maintaining open communication about progress. The onsite family therapy program encourages families to discover new ways to nurture, trust, and support each other through the recovery process.

Skyland Trail also prioritizes community education and outreach as part of its mission. The organization offers a variety of learning opportunities for professionals, families, and community members, helping to enhance understanding of mental health and psychiatric treatment. Signature events like the Arts in the Garden and lectures focused on the intersection of creativity, healing, and mental health invite attendees to celebrate resilience and talent beyond diagnoses. Annual events such as the Skyland Trail 5K Run/Walk engage families, individuals, and groups in supporting the organization’s evidence-based programs for adolescents and adults. Proceeds from these events help reduce financial barriers to treatment, enabling more families to access the care they need.

Through its thoughtful integration of medical care, psychiatric expertise, family involvement, and community engagement, Skyland Trail aims to empower every client to take courageous steps toward long-term wellness. The organization stands as a beacon of hope and support, championing the belief that recovery is possible, step by step, for all individuals facing the challenges of mental illness.
