    Caring staff, serious management concerns

I toured this older, well-kept one-story facility with pleasant grounds and a nice dining room; many long-tenured, caring staff and an impressive RN kept families informed and often went above and beyond. However, management felt cheap and unprofessional, turnover and mismanagement have hurt quality, and I saw worrying signs - understaffing (no 24/7 nurse, thin evenings/weekends), reports of medication/security problems, staff sleeping, and infection-control/code concerns. Food and activities were mixed (some love the meals and social events; others find them limited or poor) and a few residents seemed sad or confined. For an affordable, Medicaid-friendly, community-minded option it's worth a visit, but I would not trust it for moderate or round-the-clock nursing needs without asking tough questions.

About Heritage Assisted Living of Boise

Heritage Assisted Living of Boise sits in a quiet Boise neighborhood with plenty of trees and grass, which gives it a peaceful feeling, and it's got a red brick building that's just one story, so nobody has to worry about stairs, and they recently remodeled it with things like new carpet, wood floors, fresh paint, new furniture, and new decorations that keep it looking clean and homey. Folks can choose assisted living or memory care, and there's a separate area built just for people with Alzheimer's and dementia where the staff pay special attention and there's extra safety technology like bracelets that sound alarms if someone tries to leave. The staff are there 24 hours a day, always awake, and there are nurses on hand, plus visiting healthcare professionals like dentists, podiatrists, physical, speech, and occupational therapists who come right to the building. The team helps with things people do every day, like bathing in regular tubs or wheelchair-accessible showers, dressing, taking medicine, and getting in and out of bed or chairs-even with lifts if needed-and they care for people who use wheelchairs or need help walking around.

Meals are served in the dining room, and they plan them to be healthy and balanced, using good ingredients with plenty of options for different diets, such as vegetarian, diabetic, or gluten-free, and there's even a daily salad bar, plus snacks and guest meals if someone's loved ones visit. They bring in chefs who try to make meals lively and tasty, and there's never any need for residents to cook since all the meals come included, so folks don't have to spend time or money on groceries, and there's room service if someone feels like eating in their room for the day. The place is pet-friendly, meaning people can have their small pets around, and outdoor spaces like two courtyards and raised flower beds encourage gardening or just enjoying some fresh air; there's a swimming pool and two jacuzzi tubs for those who want to soak or do some light exercise.

Inside, you'll see open reading nooks, game tables, TV areas, and plenty of space set aside for art, stretching classes, yoga, cooking lessons, group games, and devotional services that happen both onsite and offsite, so people can keep up with activities or make new friends if they want to, and there's an activities director in charge of new programs and trips, too, so there's usually something going on. There's transportation available: folks can park their own cars, catch the bus nearby, or use the scheduled rides for errands or doctor appointments, though there are extra fees for some trips. People can smoke outdoors but nowhere inside, either in their own room or in public spaces. Heritage also offers therapy, companionship care, respite stays, hospice services, aging in place support, memory care, and help for folks who wander or have behavioral issues, plus care for incontinence, diabetes, or people who need reminders to go to the bathroom, and the fees change based on how much care a resident needs, with memory care averaging about $3,500 for a studio room.

People pay using private funds, social security, veteran's benefits, or insurance, and the place has been family-owned and run since back in 1960 with a focus on supporting each person's privacy, dignity, independence, and changing needs as they age. Both men and women are welcome, and the building is set up for wheelchairs everywhere, including showers and tubs. The whole place is friendly and kept tidy, aiming to make every day comfortable, quiet, and safe whether someone needs just a little help a day or a lot more care as time goes on.
