    Nice campus but staffing concerns

I toured and moved my mom in - the campus is clean, attractive, and feels like a small, family-style community with beautiful grounds. Staff were mostly friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable; physical therapy and activities are strong and the dining room meals are convenient. Rooms are small (studios with no kitchen), but pricing and Medicaid options were clearly explained and the move-in was easy. Red flags: occasional understaffing, long wait times, inconsistent meal timing, and troubling reports about medication errors and memory-care communication/turnover. Overall I'm cautiously satisfied - great people and setting, but verify nursing and memory-care reliability before committing.

    About Downers Grove Senior Living

Downers Grove Senior Living goes by the name The Pearl of Downers Grove and is part of Pearl Healthcare, which runs several places like this, each with its own look and feel, so if you've seen names like The Pearl of Crystal Lake or The Pearl of Elk Grove, they all mean a bit of individuality at each spot, and this one's no different-you'll know you're at Downers Grove because the team and the building feel like their own. It's built for seniors who need different types of help, from independent living to assisted living and memory care, and you can get skilled nursing or even home care if that's what's needed, and they cover a whole range of care, including short-term rehab if you're coming right out of a hospital, Alzheimer's and dementia care, longer-term stay, even post-acute and special therapies like for orthopedics or pulmonary problems.

They've got a solid team with nurses around all the time, a doctor on call, aides for dressing, bathing, grooming, moving about-whatever the daily routine calls for-and they're set up to help people with diabetes, wound care, and even more complex situations like tracheostomy care, plus they've handled folks with behavioral issues and those who need reminders for daily things, so you see all levels, light to heavy care, and supervision 24 hours a day, and they've got systems in place, like alarm bracelets and wander alerts for folks who tend to wander or need extra watching. There's a secure, dedicated memory care building where staff keep everyone safe, and there's lots to do besides just sitting around, like stretching classes, chair exercises, gardening clubs, happy hours, games, and chances to keep skills sharp, including special activities designed for residents with dementia. Meals come with the deal-restaurant style or room service, and they'll work with any diet needs, including low-sodium or special diets, and the food is made to be enjoyable, not just basic.

The grounds are well-kept and let people enjoy outdoor spaces as well as a variety of indoor places, whether it's for socializing in the game room, using the wi-fi, reading, or faith services led by a chaplain. They've got apartments and some semi-private rooms, all with private bathrooms and accessible showers, which is handy, and the building's secure with plenty of safety features, including a sprinkler system and emergency response throughout. Residents can bring a dog or cat, get housekeeping and laundry done without fuss, and enjoy maintenance-free living, so you don't have to worry about chores. There's transportation available, a salon/barbershop, fitness center, and even space for arts and crafts, so there's always something to join in or do. Staff handle medication management, help with insulin shots, and take care of daily needs so residents can stay as independent as possible but get help when needed, and families can feel a bit more at peace knowing there's skilled help on hand day and night.

They've got options for those who want to keep living on their own but appreciate the safety net, and as care needs change, it's possible to move to another level of support without leaving the campus, so you can stay surrounded by familiar faces and staff who know your routines. They offer respite, hospice services, and even private duty or home healthcare if that's called for. Activities run every day, with an activity director planning both fun and meaningful options to keep people moving, learning, and connected to others. Downers Grove Senior Living focuses on making everyone comfortable, respected, and valued in a homelike place that supports each person's interests and needs.
