    Caring staff, but unsafe conditions

I appreciated how caring, attentive and compassionate many nurses and CNAs were - they truly went above and beyond and made residents comfortable. But I also witnessed serious problems: understaffing and high nurse turnover, an old building with urine odor and second-hand smoke, crowded halls, and dangerous safety lapses (an unplugged oxygen concentrator and a health issue ignored that resulted in an ICU transfer). Because of the safety concerns I cannot recommend the facility despite the kind staff.

About Medina Nursing Center and Outpatient Therapy

Medina Nursing Center and Outpatient Therapy sits as a locally owned care community that's been serving seniors since 1965, and it does a little bit of everything you'd expect, with some extras, and folks can see right away that it's a skilled nursing facility with long-term and short-term care, rehabilitation, and outpatient therapy services, plus a good range of programs for memory care, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's disease, so if someone's looking for help with daily needs like bathing, dressing, or eating, or maybe they need wound care, diabetic management, IV therapy, or even tracheostomy care, there are trained staff on-site all day and all night, offering help that respects dignity and personal rhythm, and there's a big focus on treating everyone like family without making everything feel too fancy or cold. Veterans can use Veterans Benefits here and there's programming and recognition for them during the year, since Medina Nursing Center is approved by the Veterans Administration and actually holds a contract for that, which makes it a place a lot of veterans come to for their care needs.

Inside the center, folks get apartment-style living with wide walkways and full wheelchair access, so getting around is easier and safer, and they've got things like King Olav Lounge, which has a big TV and a bird atrium for folks who like to look at birds or just sit and enjoy some music or join in for rhythm band, cards and games, arts and crafts, group crossword puzzles, and even a food committee if someone likes to give feedback about meals, and their worship services run regularly, too, so those who value church or don't want to miss a service can keep up with that just fine. There's also a beauty and barber shop, and the staff keep up with laundry, housekeeping, and apartment maintenance, and for those who want to stay busy or get out, there are bus rides to outings, regular social events, fitness programs like chair aerobics and volleyball, and special programming for holidays and veterans' events. Outdoor spaces are set up for both relaxation and group activities, and a lot is done to help everyone stay engaged both physically and mentally, with different levels of involvement depending on what each person can or wants to do.

Rehabilitation and therapy have a big place here, so physical, occupational, and speech therapy are all on-site, whether for short-term bounce-back from illness or surgery, or longer-term needs, and people who had strokes, or who are dealing with memory loss, can get specific attention. They've got both Medicare and Medicaid licensing, so coverage options include public programs, and Medina is a member of both the Illinois Health Care Association and the American Health Care Association, which means there's a level of oversight and commitment to state and national standards. They're known for a warm, home-like feel that comes through less like a hospital and more like a community, and with help available for each person's daily routines, plus attention to dignity and support, most families find peace of mind knowing someone's paying attention without being overbearing.
