    Loving staff, poor organization, disappointing

I was disappointed and cannot recommend this facility. The staff - especially Activities Director Diana K. - are loving and amazing, but chronic understaffing, recent job losses and administration changes have left residents confused and scattered. Communication and cleanliness need work in this older, faith-based, family-feel community. Great people, poor organization; it needs real readjustment.

About New Athens For The Aged

New Athens Home For The Aged sits on about an acre on 203 S Johnson St in New Athens, Illinois, right on half a city block with roads on three sides and an alley out back, and the main building's all one story made of brick and block, nearly 18,000 square feet, originally built in the 1960s but had some big additions and renovations done since then, plus there are two outbuildings, a pole-framed two-car garage and a boiler room for the hot water heat system, so there's lots of rooms and spaces, including activity rooms, a kitchen, several shower rooms, and extra utility areas from when it was a 53-bed nursing and retirement home, and you'll find two basements where the laundry and more utilities are tucked away. Folks think about all kinds of ways to use the building now, maybe apartments, offices, climate-controlled storage, or condos, since the space is flexible, though it gets sold 'AS IS, WHERE IS', meaning no warranties or promises of any kind, and there's a 10% buyer's premium, and closing needs to happen in 30 days, but the agreement depends on the title being clear and insurable, and zoning being all right for whatever comes next. The place is a non-profit, church-related facility within a Continuing Care Retirement Community, so it has different levels of care for seniors as their needs change, including skilled nursing, assisted living, and memory care for folks with Alzheimer's or dementia, with nursing staff there 12 to 16 hours every day and a 24-hour call system always on in case anyone needs help fast. Housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and parking services are all there, sometimes part of the rent or for an extra fee, and there's a professional chef making meals every day, with allergy and special diet options, usually one or two prepared meals, served restaurant-style. There are private rooms, kitchenettes, cable TV, Wi-Fi, phones, air conditioning, and rooms can come furnished, along with an emergency alert system and move-in help if needed. The community has its own library, fitness and arts rooms, a spa, movie theater, garden paths, a game room, and several outdoor spots, with organized daily activities, movie nights, and music or arts programs, and family can get support services too. Local healthcare providers, including nurse practitioners and a nearby hospital, make sure medical support is never far away, and the staff help out with medication, bathing, dressing, transfers, and daily life tasks, with care for folks who can't walk well. Seniors usually need to be 55 or 62 and up, with options for those who want to live independently but still have care and supervision close by when needed, and specialized services can be brought in upon request. Memory care costs more than standard health care, as expected, especially for people over 65, but Medicaid and Medicare are accepted. Some places like this focus on skilled nursing and rehab, supporting both health and quality of life activities for residents who want a safe, welcoming place to live and age.
