Columbus Transitional Care and Rehabilitation at 2100 Midway St. in Columbus, Indiana, used to be a skilled nursing facility with an average of about 50 residents each day, and they offered 24/7 care for people recovering from illness or surgery, including folks who needed extra help moving around or handling daily activities, and while the place had private bathrooms, kitchenettes, high-speed internet, cable TV, and even things like a fitness room, media room, and community gardens, they also had programs for wellness, nutrition, and support for people dealing with aging or disabilities, with transportation, meal planning, and medication help available anytime, but after the facility closed, the property got taken over by Thrive Alliance, who also go by Housing Partnerships Inc., and now they're planning to tear down the old building and put up Haw Creek Meadows, a four-story complex with affordable apartments for families and seniors, along with a child care space that will serve both residents and folks from the community, and the plan is to build 128 units split evenly between family housing with a child care center in the first phase and senior housing in the second, with special attention for those making 30%, 50%, or 60% of the area's median income, and they're also adding things like a coffee shop, walking trail, picnic spots, and a community garden to help bring people together, which should help counter some of the loss of affordable housing nearby and let both older adults and young families enjoy a good amount of green space and activities while staying pretty close to town, and they'll get some money from local and federal programs to help pay for the new apartments, including tax credits and funding through READI, and they expect to finish building and start renting out the new units in 2026 or 2027 after local approvals and demolition work.
