    Friendly staff, deadly care lapses

I had a mixed experience. I found staff who were friendly, caring, responsive, and attentive to dietary needs with good food and strong COVID protocols, but the facility was inconsistently clean (urine/feces smells, sticky floors, mouse traps), understaffed and unsafe (residents unattended, slumped in chairs, only one CNA on duty), and I witnessed serious lapses in care - my grandma was not given her BIPAP and died shortly after. I cannot recommend this place due to the care and safety concerns despite some excellent staff.

    About Riverside Village

Riverside Village sits on West Franklin Street near State Road 19 in Elkhart, Indiana, close to the Elkhart County Health Department, parks, and local spots like Walgreens Pharmacy, Starbucks, and Michaels Bar, and you'll find the place open all day and night, every day, so folks always have care when they need it. The staff treat their work as a calling and are known for being kind, often feeling like an extension of the family, and they know how to help seniors with different needs-whether it's memory care, assisted or independent living, short-term rehab, respite, hospice, or nursing home support. Nurses and other care experts work together, covering things like diabetic care, incontinence, non-ambulatory needs, and even more advanced health needs, while keeping to standards set by state licensing and visited for monthly checks to keep the place safe.

The team includes everyone from doctors and aides to social workers, volunteers, and even clergy for those in hospice, and they work alongside local hospice partners so that folks get medical help, spiritual support, counseling, social work, and any needed medical supplies or medicine. The dining area serves up nutritious meals made with decent ingredients, and there's a steady stream of activities like bingo and crafts in the arts and crafts rooms, along with wellness and fitness programs, indoor spaces for gathering, devotional time, and outings off-site when possible.

People with memory loss have a secure area with programs made for their needs, following a system called "Meaningful Day," which gets folks involved and active for their body, mind, and spirit, and the staff uses up-to-date methods based on research, making sure each person's care is right for them. Rehabilitation after an illness or injury means a plan is put together quickly after folks arrive-within 72 hours-covering therapies like physical, occupational, or speech therapy, wound care, fall prevention, and more, and the goal is always to help people regain what they can. Short-term respite stays help family caregivers who need a break, and extended respite is possible if needed, always with personalized care based on individual comfort and safety.

Riverside Village takes several payment options, including private pay and Medicaid, with people on hand to help with paperwork. Common rooms are warm and cheerful, giving a homelike feeling while staying safe, and the care fits whether someone needs help with daily life or ongoing medical attention. The staff aims to keep people as independent as possible, and there's a focus on quality of life, not just treating illnesses, and the community uses scores and ratings to keep track of how things are going. The environment is friendly and welcoming, with plenty of chances to join in community life each day.
