    Clean building, but unsafe care

I'm conflicted: the building is clean, the activities director and many caregivers are genuinely kind, and my parent enjoyed outings and meals. But chronic understaffing and inconsistent care caused slow bathroom help, lost glasses, medication mishandling, and poor wound care that led to hospitalization. Management was often unresponsive or dismissive. Because of those safety and care failures, I cannot recommend this facility despite some wonderful staff.

    About Miller's Merry Manor

Miller's Merry Manor has been around since 1964 and sits in Walkertown, Indiana, as part of Miller's Health Systems, and this place can have up to 66 Medicare-certified beds, and they got that number because their building uses a unique pod design, which means the different care areas are grouped together to help folks get the right services. They work with discharge planners from places like Pinnacle Hospital, Porter Hospital, Regency Hospital of Porter County, and St. Mary's Medical Center, helping people who need to continue their care or rehab somewhere comfortable after leaving the hospital. They do short-term rehab-think things like physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy for people who need to get back on their feet after surgery or an illness, and they're also set up for long-term care, memory care, skilled nursing, intermediate care, custodial care, and even hospice care when it's needed.

They have assisted living apartments that come as one-bedroom units or studio spaces, and their rooms are set up to be private or semi-private, so people can pick what fits them. The whole place is wheelchair accessible, including a van that can take people out for errands or community trips, and there's parking for visitors on-site. Inside, they've got places for all kinds of activities, with a big activity room with round tables and nice decorations for social events, plus a lounge for billiards, and a rec room for games. There's a chapel area that's quiet and filled with religious artwork, and outside there's a tranquil gazebo with leafy landscaping where folks go to relax or visit with family. They've got a beauty and barber shop lined with chairs and large mirrors, and a little ice cream parlor for residents to enjoy treats with friends.

The care types here are varied, so besides nursing care and senior services, they also offer specialized memory care for folks with cognitive problems, and their real-life rehab programs have therapy rooms and equipment for all three main therapies-physical, occupational, and speech-which people can use as inpatients or outpatients, depending on what each person needs. The place has clinical pathways, which is a special plan for each resident's health conditions, and they work with post-surgery patients, whether they've had orthopedic, heart, or neuro-type operations.

If someone needs adult day care, Miller's Merry Manor has a program for that, which covers things like exercises, medication reminders, activities, and nutritious snacks or meals. There are also respite stay options for folks who only need to be there for a short time, maybe because a regular caregiver needs a break. Meals come in a restaurant-style dining room, and the common spaces have comfortable armchairs with floral patterns and plenty of side tables for books or snacks. Residents get scheduled activities, community outings, and access to therapy programs right on campus. The facility's 100% employee owned, which means the staff all have a stake in how everything runs. Miller's Merry Manor doesn't pretend to be perfect, but it tries to offer the right mix of health services, apartments, and chances for community so older folks can get support and care at whatever level they need.
