    Quiet apartment but poor care

I like the quiet, private hallway and my nicely furnished private apartment and the few helpful staff. But chronic staff shortages, poor communication, broken promises and management turnover have delayed promised memory care; meals are stingy-dry sandwiches with no condiments, unhealthy snacks, too much pasta and dessert and not enough cooked vegetables or fruit. I don't recommend this facility.

    About Copper Creek

Copper Creek is a senior living community in West Union, Iowa, located at 609 Highway 150 N. The place lets residents bring some pets and has options for independent living, assisted living, and memory care. There are studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, along with companion suites. Every apartment has a private bathroom, a kitchenette, air conditioning, and individual controls for heat. Rent covers water and electric heat. Residents can choose in-house haircuts or barber services, and there's a full hair and nail salon open on Saturdays. Copper Creek accepts check payments, has free high-speed WiFi, cable TV, and local telephone service.

The facility sits on five acres with manicured landscaping, raised garden beds, patios, and several community gardens where residents can join gardening groups. There's parking for guests and residents. Inside, there are common areas with TVs, a bistro dining area, a coffee bar with a barista, a recreation room, game room with cards, bingo, and other games, a billiard room, a public computer room, and a library. Residents listen to or join the musical group, take part in arts and crafts, and enjoy the "Color Outside the Lines" program, which includes puzzles, brain games, art, and music. Game nights and daily creative activities help residents stay active and social, and there's a musical group that comes together regularly. Activities cover social, cultural, educational, and spiritual themes, and chapel services and non-denominational religious services are offered in the on-site spiritual sanctuary.

Meals are home-cooked, served three times daily in a restaurant-style dining room, with snacks available too. Residents can also choose community dining or spend time in the bistro for lighter options. Housekeeping is offered weekly, and staff washes linens and does dry cleaning. Each resident gets laundry done once a week, though extra services are available. Maintenance, water treatment, carpet cleaning, and floor care services add to the comfort.

Assistance is always on hand for daily needs, with personal aides, medication administration, personal care and wellness services, and skilled nursing all provided in-house. A 24-hour awake staff watches the building, and residents have emergency pendants for added safety. There are full time care options for those recovering from surgery or needing long-term support, and respite care is available for short stays up to one month. Memory care supports adults with dementia or Alzheimer's, with two layout designs and staff trained for those special needs.

Transportation is free and arranged regularly for shopping and appointments. Residents and guests have space to park. The facility's daily schedule runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and stays closed on weekends, though round-the-clock assistance remains for those who need it. The professional caregiving team at Copper Creek is trained to help residents maintain as much independence and dignity as possible, customizing support based on each person's needs. The community is licensed by the state, affiliated with the Iowa Health Care Association and Iowa Center for Assisted Living, and managed in the style of a family business, giving staff the flexibility to personalize care programs. The place tries to offer a supportive, comfortable, and respectful environment, welcoming seniors who can't or don't want to live on their own anymore.
