    Neglectful care, rude staff, outbreaks

I've had a mixed and upsetting experience. Some staff (especially dietary) are caring and the meals/activities are good, but others were rude or neglectful - my loved one had belongings go missing, staff threatened to call police when I complained, and overnight nurse alarms sometimes took ~25 minutes to get a response. Visiting is limited to one 15-minute visit per week, dishes were hand-washed leaving soap crud, there've been whooping cough outbreaks, and I'm planning to pursue legal action.

About Good Samaritan Society - Sherman County

Good Samaritan Society - Sherman County sits in Goodland, Kansas, and serves a small community with about 5,500 people, and this place is known for skilled nursing and care for seniors who need extra help after a hospital stay, illness, or surgery, so folks get assistance with transfers, medication, bathing, and dressing, and they make sure there's always supervision day and night for safety, plus you'll find things like personalized care plans that promote as much independence as possible for every resident, and while the facility isn't part of a Continuing Care Retirement Community, it does provide different levels of long-term care, skilled nursing, assisted living, memory care, independent living, respite care, and even some home care options, so seniors haven't got to move far if needs change, and the staff, though given a 3 out of 5 rating for hours worked, are described as helpful, kind, and joyful to residents and visitors. Medicaid and Medicare are both accepted, and there are 45 beds officially approved for these programs, with about 40 regularly occupied, so there's room for new folks but it stays busy, and Good Samaritan Society - Sherman County runs as a nonprofit connected to church ownership, which some might find comforting. The rooms come furnished and include phones, and amenities like meal preparation with special diets, housecleaning, laundry, walking paths, gardens, a dining room, an arts room, a barber and salon, and fun activities like movie nights and resident-run clubs help keep people active, plus there are emergency alert systems and a sprinkler system for safety, but the overall rating sits rather low at 2 out of 5 stars by Medicare.gov, mostly due to a recent history of health audits and past abuse flags, though the quality of clinical services still gets a decent 4 out of 5. The long-term care section even got recognized with a B-minus grade for its services as of October 2023, so while there's some strength in the care and activities, the health inspections and staff levels suggest the place still has areas to work on. Special programs cover dementia and Alzheimer's care, plus there's ongoing training for caregivers, Medicaid training, and certifications, which means workers keep learning how to help residents better. The community hosts wellness and counseling programs, offers nutritional counseling, and provides therapy services, with nursing, therapists, and social workers working together. Vaccination rates like 67.08% for pneumonia leave some room for improvement, and recent records show less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term care days, which is pretty low. While there's no resident or family council, residents can still get involved in the daily happenings, and the place remains focused on support, safety, and a set routine, though it can't claim high marks everywhere if you're looking at ratings. For folks in or near Goodland, Good Samaritan Society - Sherman County does give a range of housing and care choices-independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing-for seniors wanting help while still keeping their dignity and some independence, and the staff try to make it both safe and friendly, even if improvements could be made.
