    Excellent rehab but watch meds

I stayed for months after a stroke and the therapy, rehab and clinical care were excellent - the staff were genuinely caring, attentive and kept me well informed. I had a private room, Medicare handled the turnaround, and the rehab team got me home; I truly couldn't have chosen a better place for recovery. That said, I encountered medication/insulin timing errors, wrong or cold meals and occasional kitchen odors, dirty carpet, and troubling admin/staff issues (frequent turnover, poor communication and high tip expectations for deliveries). Overall: fantastic hands-on care and rehab, but stay vigilant about meds, meals and management.

About Rolling Hills Health & Rehab of Topeka

Rolling Hills Health & Rehab of Topeka, part of the Midwest Health Family of Communities, sits on SW Urish Road and offers a range of care levels including assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, and independent living, so people can move between services without having to leave the community, and with 70 certified beds and an average daily census of 42, the facility often has some rooms available, though not always. The place runs as a for-profit partnership owned by groups like Floyd C Eaton III Trust 2012, James Brett Klausman Trust 2012, Jamie N Eaton Trust 2012, Klaton Enterprises, LLC, Michael Graham Klausman Trust 2012, Floyd Eaton, and James Klausman, and it is managed by Midwest Health, Inc. and Kenneth Keller, which keeps the local, family-owned approach to care. Residents get nurse care with 3.16 nurse hours per person each day, which does fall below the state average of 4.0, and there have been 37 deficiencies noted on inspection reports, including specific ones related to infection control and not always having a registered nurse on duty for at least 8 hours every day, as required. The facility also had deficiencies in making sure food comes from approved sources and sometimes has challenges meeting federal standards that protect residents from the spread of infections, plus there have been times when training for nurse aides and formal observation of their work didn't meet expected standards. Even with these issues, Rolling Hills does offer a secure memory care community for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, and provides personal care, like help with bathing, dressing, medication management, and supervision 24 hours a day. Suites and one-bedroom apartments often come with private bathrooms, kitchenettes, cable TV, individual air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and furnished rooms, and people can join in activities like arts and music, walks, movies, gardening, and community events, plus there's a dining room, library, recreation areas, an arts room, fitness space, a spa, game room, and movie theater. Everyday services include three home-cooked meals that can fit special diets, emergency voice alert systems, transportation, housekeeping, laundry, and move-in help. Residents and their families can take part in councils for sharing concerns or helping to improve life there, and the facility takes Medicare and Medicaid. The staff have been around for a long time, provide care plans that are personalized, and focus on supporting residents' physical, mental, and social well-being while offering rapid recovery care and different living options all in one community.
