    Clean, caring staff; administrative issues

I toured Homestead and overall I was pleased: the building is clean, peaceful and sunny with roomy studio/kitchenette apartments, on-site dining, salon and active programming, and the staff were generally kind and caring - my mom is happy. That said, I saw administrative issues (messy office, unprepared tour, poor coordination), an occasionally unprofessional head of nursing, high turnover/understaffing and spotty communication; parts of the facility feel dated, the activities room is small, and dining cleanup can be inconsistent. I'd recommend a visit but ask detailed questions about staffing and memory-care suitability before deciding.

About Homestead Assisted Living & Memory Care of Wichita

Homestead Assisted Living & Memory Care of Wichita sits on West Maple Street near Meadows Park, right in the Western Wichita neighborhood, and it's been around for about twenty years, which lets folks know they've been doing this for a while and probably have a pretty good routine down, so when you walk in, you'll see a small, cozy community with space for up to 48 residents, and they've got a mix of private studio and one-bedroom apartments, all with plenty of closet space and private bathrooms with safety bars and walk-in showers, and you can bring your own things to furnish the room the way you like, plus you control your own heating and air, so you can keep your room just how you want it, and the whole community is set up so folks feel comfortable and supported, whether they're there for assisted living or memory care needs like Alzheimer's or dementia.

The staff has certified team members on site 24 hours every day, with a nurse on call all the time, and they help with things like bathing, dressing, medication management, blood sugar checks - though they can't give insulin shots - and other care like diabetic or incontinence support as long as you can manage most of it yourself, and they've got a full health records system so all your health information gets shared easily between nurses and doctors, and they even have visiting professionals like podiatrists, therapists, and a salon/barber shop, so you can get most of your needs met right there without leaving.

They pay a lot of attention to privacy, and all the care is done in a way that keeps things confidential, which folks usually appreciate, and for folks with memory care needs, they have secure areas and use bracelets to prevent wandering, plus programs that help with memory issues, recreation, and stress, and they run daily activities, exercise groups, social gatherings, and even devotional services right onsite, and everything takes place in comfortable indoor and outdoor spaces, with walking paths, a theater room, an outdoor patio, fitness center, and special areas to socialize or have family visit.

Meals are taken care of by a professional chef, and you get three home-cooked meals every day, with anyone who needs special diets getting accommodations, so you don't have to cook unless you want to, and they handle the laundry and cleaning each week, so your room stays tidy, and if you need a ride to an appointment, they've got transportation services for that too.

There's a community fee when you move in and the monthly costs depend on the care level - for example, $825 for medium care, $425 for low care - and they do an assessment to decide what level fits best, and they're open to residents who are 55 or older, and their approach is to match each person to just the right amount of help, with care plans that change if your needs change, so you can keep as much independence as possible while still having someone nearby to help, and the staff say they treat residents like family because they work with the same caregivers over time.

They're part of the Midwest Health group, and they follow all nondiscrimination policies, and since they're both a personal care facility and a clinic with medical oversight, they can handle a range of care situations, including short-term rehab for folks getting over surgery, illness, or accidents, plus cognitive support for memory care residents, and the place is set up with things like a 24-hour emergency system and secured spaces, so you know someone's always around to help if something happens, and the setting feels home-like, with a focus on celebrating life, respecting each person's choices, and making sure everyone feels safe and welcome.
