The Sarah Frye Home sits about 2.3 miles outside Auburn, Maine, and goes back to 1903 when it first started serving just five women, but now there are thirty-six men and women living there, so it's grown quite a bit over the years, and it remains a nonprofit place run by a board of trustees and licensed by the State of Maine Department of Human Health Services. They have studio rooms you can decorate yourself however you like, and you get your own private entrance too, which some people appreciate for that sense of privacy, and while they started mainly with residential care, now they offer a good range of services including assisted living, independent living, memory care for dementia and Alzheimer's, and even diabetes management and incontinence care, with medicine preparation and administration available for those who need it. Their staff stays on-site around the clock and gets training to help with things like bathing, dressing, transfers, plus they've got a 24-hour call system, so you can feel somebody's always quite close at hand if help's needed, and Susan Corliss serves as the Administrator if you've got specific questions or concerns about care. This place permits smoking in designated areas, which can be rare to find these days, and they try to make life comfortable and safe with care plans suited to each individual, making it so everyone's needs are met with respect. The team tries to treat folks like family, focusing on making it a real home, and you can see that in the way they try to keep things welcoming and not institutional, plus you get a barber/salon, an on-site podiatrist, gardens, walking paths, and even a well-stocked library, which can make day-to-day life feel a little more normal and pleasant. There's a resident-driven activities program with things like movie nights and community-sponsored events, and they make space for people to enjoy socializing and developing friendships, with internet access for anybody who wants to stay connected or entertained in their own way. Dietician consultants help with personalized meal plans, and transportation's available for medical appointments in town, which can be handy. The Sarah Frye Home's average rating sits at about 8 out of 10, making it the third highest-rated senior community around Auburn, which folks might find reassuring, though nothing's perfect and every place has its way of doing things. The setting's got a neighborhood feel with medical offices, pharmacies, churches, and restaurants nearby, so you don't feel too cut off from town. Staff tries to keep each resident safe and as independent as possible, aiming for comfort, making sure daily help like medication management and basic care are always provided, and they let people personalize their space to really feel at home.
Scary tour unclean residents bedbugs
I had mixed, worrying experiences at this senior living facility: some caregivers were compassionate and very professional, but many staff were moody or lazy and the manager (Sue) was unfriendly. My tour was scary-unclean residents, signs of bedbugs, and I was told DHS had been involved; honestly, this place should be closed.
