    Friendly staff negligent dementia care

I appreciated the friendly staff, great meals, and the independent-living setup — I can see why employees call it a rewarding place to work. However, their physical care was poor: my loved one was discharged to the ER, and the facility misrepresented services and violated our contract. Not suitable for long‑term dementia care.

    About Schooner Memory Care

Schooner Memory Care sits at 196 Stetson Road in Auburn, Maine, where its 48,000 square foot building stretches across eight peaceful acres inside the Schooner Estates Senior Living Community. The community focuses on supporting seniors with memory impairments like Alzheimer's and dementia, dividing residents among three intimate neighborhoods, each with room for 22 people, keeping things more familiar and manageable for folks living there. Safety comes first, so you'll find secure entries, locked exits needing a code, monitored doors, and secure outdoor gardens so residents can enjoy fresh air without worry. The design includes special touches, like custom door colors, circadian lighting that follows natural daylight, detailed finishes to help with orientation, and softly lit wide halls that are easy to walk through, making the place pleasant and not too confusing for those a bit forgetful.

Inside, each memory care studio has its own bathroom, lots of sunlight, good storage, a spot for meals, and cozy living spaces, so residents feel at home. There's always something happening, like coffee gatherings, piano concerts, art and craft shows, movie nights, Bible studies, billiards, exercise, sing-a-longs, bird watching, gardening, baking, and group outings, all tailored to help residents stay active and social, but in smaller groups for comfort. Health care is a big part too, with screenings, flu shots, seminars, referrals, and special mailings about health tips-plus support for daily things like medication, nutrition, and personal care.

Amenities cover most needs-from a fitness center, billiards room, health spa, libraries, and parlors, to housekeeping, laundry, dry cleaning, and even kitchenettes for those who like more independence. Residents can use cable TV, Wi-Fi, and guest parking, while safety measures include a sprinkler system and handicap-accessible features. There's a multi-purpose room and The Peaks activity room, both fitted with hearing loop systems to help those with hearing aids keep up with what's going on. Residents can get help with walking or using a wheelchair, and if they need appointments or want to attend community events, supervised transportation is available.

The staff is trained for memory care and stick to each neighborhood so they get to know everyone, which helps build trust and familiarity. Someone's always there, day or night, to keep an eye out and help out, and each resident gets a personalized care plan, with the aim to balance safety, independence, and comfort. You'll find assisted living, independent living, and respite care all on offer, meaning there are options as people's needs change. Meals are provided with attention to nutrition and enjoyability, and family-style support helps everyone feel included. The Administrator, Michael Lacasse, and the Director of Community Outreach, Ben Fournier, lead the team with a focus on making sure there's a sense of community, belonging, and dignity for everyone. There's more general information at schoonermemorycare.com for those who want to look into it further, but the place is really about day-to-day stability and comfort for seniors with memory care needs.
