    Attentive staff and beautiful campus

I moved in nervous about aging and needing care, but the attentive, loving staff quickly put me at ease - I give it 5 stars. The campus is clean, safe and well-kept, with lovely cottages and well-laid-out apartments (I love my ground-floor window view), walking paths, beautiful holiday decorations, and a pleasant, active social atmosphere. The elegant, spacious dining room has terrific food and service, and there are strong activities, social services, community involvement and thoughtful planning for increasing care needs. It's on the pricey side, but the comfort, medical support, COVID handling and genuinely friendly, helpful staff make it worth it.

Thornton Oaks Retirement Community sits on 29 wooded acres in Brunswick, Maine, offering independent living, assisted living, and memory care options for seniors. The community includes townhomes, luxury apartments, single-family homes, condominiums, cottages, and pet-friendly apartments, so residents choose from one to four-bedroom units with features like washers and dryers, air conditioning, patios, and even some with waterfront views, while staff take care of systems, grounds, exterior painting, maintenance, and housekeeping. At Thornton Oaks, residents find a hometown feel, with friendly staff and neighbors, and plenty of amenities, including a library, a community garden, outdoor spaces, a secure wandering garden, beautifully landscaped drives, parking, and miles of walking trails through the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust trail system at Crystal Spring Farm.

The Garden at the Mid Coast Senior Health Center uses The Best Friends Approach for memory care, focusing on comfort, soothing decor, safety, secured living, and familiarity to help those with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia. The whole place feels comforting and calm, the living and dining rooms in The Garden are warmly decorated, and residents can safely enjoy the outdoor wandering garden. There's 24-hour skilled nursing care, access to hospice care, community-based therapeutic and managed care, and options for long-term and short-term rehab needs, with physical, occupational, and speech therapies, along with podiatry services and health programs led by an RN.

Medical specialists, radiologists, and therapists are available on-site. Thornton Oaks is closely connected to Mid Coast Hospital, just six miles away, with priority access to health services at the adjacent Mid Coast Senior Health Center, so residents don't have to pay extra or sign a contract. Residents enjoy freshly prepared meals made from local foods in the dining room, with the community receiving awards for best meals and balanced nutrition. There are wellness programs run by experienced staff, with exercise classes, equipment, Tai Chi and Yoga, and a membership program offers complimentary access to the Running Start exercise program and use of the Bowdoin College pool. Art exhibits, music, speakers, holiday events, and trips to local symphony, theater, and downtown Brunswick fill the calendar, so people stay active and engaged. The campus features activities like writing groups, bridge, bocce, croquet, ping pong, and gardening, supporting social, mental, and emotional well-being.

Residents have access to a virtual tour and can see apartments, cottages, the library, and arts events online, with current residents showing what daily life looks like. Thornton Oaks uses a homeowners cooperative model, helping residents build equity while staff handle the tough work. Both independent seniors and those needing extra care find personalized options to match their needs and interests, and the connected health facilities mean seamless care transitions. Pets are welcome, families can visit, and staff make the atmosphere friendly and supportive. Thornton Oaks, also called Brunswick Retirement Village, offers a variety of living and care choices under one roof, with comprehensive health resources, on-campus activities, thoughtful amenities, and a peaceful woodland setting that makes living easy for seniors.
