    Homey helpful staff all-inclusive care

I toured with the Director and liked the homey, woods-like place near Dresden (about a 40-minute drive). Staff were helpful, it didn't feel sterile or hospital-like and odors weren't offensive. Pricing is all-inclusive with a prepay option for a lower rate, space is available now, and they offer end-of-life care. Residents keep their independence; they do enforce rules with a 30-day exit notice for smoking/alcohol. It seems like a great place for my mom.

    About Captain Lewis Residence

Captain Lewis Residence sits in a large, renovated Victorian sea captain's home overlooking the Kennebec River in Farmingdale, Maine, and you'll find it has a homelike, bed-and-breakfast feel with beautiful living rooms, a big dining area, inviting porches, and plenty of space for both indoor and outdoor gatherings, so residents have places to relax together or enjoy time alone. The place welcomes women 55 years and older and is family owned and operated for over fourteen years, offering a steady and personal style of support. Folks can bring cats with them since the community is pet-friendly, and the rooms include both private and semi-private options to suit different needs and budgets.

Captain Lewis Residence offers assisted living as its main service, and it's got several levels of care-light, medium, and heavy-so people can stay as their needs grow over time. The staff is there 24 hours a day and can give help with all sorts of daily activities like washing, moving, dressing, and managing medicines, so residents who need assistance can always find a helping hand, including standby help for those who need a one or two person transfer or mechanical lift. There's no skilled nursing onsite, but there are visitations from nurses, podiatrists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists as needed. People stay safe with 24-hour staffing, emergency call systems, and a state-of-the-art wander alarm system using bracelets to prevent wandering, which is a good fit for folks with dementia or Alzheimer's, even though there's no dedicated, locked memory wing-staff can work with most dementia needs and handle various behaviors.

Meals are cooked onsite, with residents getting one or two prepared each day, with vegetarian options available, and everything gets served in the large dining area, plus there's laundry and housekeeping, so daily chores are taken care of. The community supports aging in place, hospice, and respite stays for short-term needs, and folks can keep enjoying life with escorts to appointments, subsidized or free transportation, and parking for those keeping their cars. The staff provides diabetic care, helps people with continence concerns, and manages medication and injections.

Residents can join all kinds of activities, like regular exercise, arts and crafts, bingo, field trips to fairs, the store, rides on the Kennebec River, entertainment, and devotional services both on and offsite, so there's something for every personality and ability. Outdoor smoking is allowed in special areas, and there are beautician and barber services to help everyone feel at ease. Captain Lewis Residence has wheelchair accessible showers, and both indoor and outdoor common spaces let residents socialize and enjoy the river views. The place doesn't provide skilled nursing or information on specific programs, but there are always staff available, and the team is known for building personal care plans so residents can get just the support they need as they age.
