    About Blanchard House

Blanchet House is a longstanding hospitality organization that has served the Portland community since its founding in 1952. Originally established by a group of University of Portland alumni, Blanchet House began as a simple mission to provide food to the unemployed in Old Town, drawing on the house of hospitality model inspired by the Catholic Worker Movement. Over the years, the organization has expanded its efforts significantly, emerging as a cornerstone of support, shelter, and sustenance for thousands of people each year, both at its downtown location and at Blanchet Farm.

Central to Blanchet House’s work is its commitment to dignity and respect for all individuals who seek assistance. The Founders Café, located at the heart of Blanchet House, is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner from Monday through Saturday. It serves freshly prepared, well-balanced meals to anyone who comes to its doors during meal hours, embracing a philosophy that everyone deserves food, clothing, community, and hope. This tradition of open-handed generosity reflects the organization’s motto: “How we walk with the broken speaks louder than how we sit with the great.”

Beyond meals, Blanchet House provides a residential program in downtown Portland, offering a safe space for up to eight months. Here, guests can recover and refocus in a substance-free environment as they take steps toward building healthier and more stable lives. The program is crafted to offer compassionate support for those seeking to make significant changes, fostering an atmosphere where personal growth is encouraged and empowered. Blanchet House also extends its impact through its Clothing Closet and by distributing vital hygiene items to people in need.

Blanchet Farm, another integral element of the organization, is located about an hour outside the city. This rural residential program specifically serves men in transition, providing them with an opportunity to pursue sobriety and personal development in a quieter, nature-rich environment. The farm experience offers participants a chance to foster healthier lifestyles, accompanied by supportive peers and staff.

Volunteers and donors are fundamental to Blanchet House’s mission. Compassionate individuals as young as fourteen are welcomed to serve meals, sort clothing, and participate in various on-site activities. Community members can also contribute from home by assembling toiletry care kits, making sack lunches, or collecting essential clothing and sleeping items to be distributed to guests. Blanchet House regularly communicates new ways to get involved and shares uplifting stories from its ongoing work, inviting ongoing relationships with supporters throughout the region.

The driving goal behind every Blanchet House program is to alleviate suffering and offer hope for a better life by serving essential aid with dignity. Through their years of growth and service, Blanchet House and Blanchet Farm have become pillars of compassionate outreach, upholding a promise to walk alongside the vulnerable with care, respect, and unwavering hospitality.
