Portland Center For Assisted, sometimes called Portland Center for Living or Portland Center for Assisted Living, sits in the heart of Portland, Maine's biggest city, and provides care for up to 170 residents, including 28 secure spaces for people living with memory loss, and people say the staff here are known for their kindness and compassion, always ready with a gentle word or smile for those who live there. The place has a strong family community feel, aiming to create a homelike space, where you'll see people chatting in the library, walking among the gardens and paths, joining in movie nights or arts and crafts classes, or picking up a book in a common room that always seems to have someone around. The building offers nursing care with a wellness team on hand, from 12 to 16 hours of nursing daily, and a 24-hour call system for safety, with help for daily tasks like dressing, bathing, and taking medicine, along with extra support for those with dementia in a safe, secure area. Living spaces range from private to semi-private, some with their own kitchenettes and private bathrooms, and you'll get your own air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and cable TV, plus wheelchair access throughout. Folks get regular meals prepared by a chef, served in a restaurant-style dining room, with snacks and special diets like for diabetes, and staff keep up with laundry, housekeeping, and move-in help. The property has many activities set up by staff or even run by residents, such as music, fitness programs, group games, and garden events, and planned outings get people out to see the area. Residents like the outdoor gardens and walking paths, the snack and game rooms, fitness center, and scheduled daily events that keep things lively as you want. There's transportation and parking, help with appointments, and even hairdressing and barber services on site. Memory care is available in a supervised section, focused on helping those with memory loss feel secure and supported. Staff pay attention to each person's needs-physical, social, and emotional-trying to make every day better, and the community accepts MaineCare, so more people can get the support they need right in their home city.

Rude unsafe dirty understaffed care
I'm very disappointed. Staff were rude, condescending and often unreachable - I had to oversee care myself. The place felt understaffed and unsafe: tiny depressing rooms, cigarette smoke and butts everywhere, a grimy fish tank and bad smells, late or missed meds and appointments, no help with bathing, hearing aids left uncharged, weight loss and a fall that led to a hip fracture; dementia care and activities were inconsistent. A few activity staff and residents were kind, but overall it's dirty, disorganized, and not worth the cost - I cannot recommend it.
