    Positive overall but needs improvements

I placed my parents here and overall had a positive experience: the executive director is proactive, staff are friendly and energetic, the place is clean and home-like, and there is 24-hour nursing coverage. Many issues get resolved, though response times can be slow and I had to advocate for serious safety/hygiene concerns. Downsides: small rooms (especially memory care), not enough aides or activities, spotty communication and unclear billing/levels of care, and a few maintenance hiccups. Food opinions vary and weight gain was a concern for us. Despite flaws, my parents thrived and I would recommend it if you stay involved.

About Charter Senior Living Of Bowie

Charter Senior Living of Bowie sits in Prince George's County and offers a calm, inviting place for older adults who need different kinds of care, including assisted living, independent living, memory care, continuing care, and even hospice and respite services, so folks can remain on campus as their needs change, and that's something families sure think about because it means there's no need to move around as health changes and sometimes that's a big relief, you know. The community's got all sorts of floor plans from small studio setups to bigger one-bedroom apartments, shared spaces, and private memory care suites, with cozy touches like recliners and soft lights for folks who need a little extra comfort, and if somebody wants a kitchenette, furnished or unfurnished units, or bathrooms set up for wheelchairs, they can find those too, along with safety features like emergency call systems in all the apartments. Some rooms come with cable or satellite TV, WiFi, and even private bathrooms, and the common areas have fireplaces, card rooms, a library, a movie theater, and spots to gather and visit, so nobody has to feel alone if they don't want to be.

There's a full dining room doing restaurant-style meals with dietary choices for people who need low sugar or special diets, and you'll find weekly happy hours and guest meals if family drops by, which makes it feel a bit more like home, and you can almost always find folks gathering in the computer lounge, movie theater, or wandering the outdoors enjoying landscaped grounds, porches, and gardens, plus if you've got a pet, dogs and cats are okay, which isn't always the case everywhere, so that's nice for someone who doesn't want to part with a companion animal. On top of all that, there's a full-service beauty salon, and for those who need it, plenty of wheelchair accessible showers and tubs, transfer help with lifts or staff assists, and even incontinence care or help with blood sugar, insulin shots, and other medical needs since the building has nurses around, a doctor on call, and therapists like podiatrists and physical therapists visiting whenever someone needs more care.

Memory care gets handled in its own special building with secured entry and wander-alert systems, and the community uses a program called Flourish℠ Memory Care, which is built around helping people living with dementia or Alzheimer's stay engaged and maintain self-esteem, with activities like music, arts and crafts, yoga, Tai Chi, stretching, offsite outings, tabletop games, and special support even for people who have unusual or hard behaviors, so families can rest easier knowing there's focused care for memory loss. Folks get three meals a day, daily housekeeping and laundry, and services like pharmacy, onsite hospice, and access to speech and occupational therapists, plus the staff sticks around 24/7 to help with activities of daily living, like dressing, bathing, or just getting around, and the community welcomes visitors at any time, day or night, which really helps keep everyone connected.

The place has easy-to-navigate hallways, cozy seating everywhere, open spaces with lots of light, and management tries to bring community events, church services, and lifelong learning into daily life, so everyone's always got something to do, even if it's just reading in the library, gardening outside, or joining in group activities like music or cooking demos. They offer partnerships with Joe & Bella for adaptive clothing, which makes dressing easier for folks with different abilities, and the payments for living here can be made by check, credit, or insurance, including Medicare, with an entry fee of $3,000. With people who've worked in senior living for over 100 years guiding things, there's a mix of personal care, medical help, fun activities, and nice surroundings, all set up to make life smoother for seniors as their care needs shift over time.
