    Caring staff but unsafe, unclean

I placed my loved one here and I'm conflicted: many staff (especially in the Alzheimer's unit/1C) were kind, caring and helpful, the grounds and activities can be lovely, and veterans' services are excellent. But cleanliness, hygiene and safety were inconsistent - dirty linens, gnats/mice, bugs in hallways, cold/uncut meals, missed catheter care/UTIs - and the memory-care felt jail-like with frequent moves, lost clothing and no privacy. Pandemic handling was alarming (many staff unvaccinated, late mandates, resident COVID deaths), communication and phone lines were terrible, and staffing drama/shortages harmed care. Transportation was unsafe at times and costs feel unjustified for the risks. I wouldn't recommend this facility; Arcadia of Crofton was far better.

    About Charlotte Hall Veterans Home

Charlotte Hall Veterans Home sits on a big, 126-acre campus and offers care for veterans and their eligible spouses who need different types of help as they age, and you'll find a variety of services there, including assisted living, skilled nursing, and secure memory care units for those who need extra safety. The facility is built with veterans in mind, so the staff tailors the care and activities to meet the needs of those who served, and all veterans get a subsidy from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which helps lower their out-of-pocket costs. There are 168 beds for assisted living and 318 beds for skilled nursing, so there's room for people at different stages of care, and they've also got hospice and palliative care for those who need more support, along with personal care and home health services. If someone needs medical help, they can see a physician, dentist, optometrist, or podiatrist on-site, and a pharmacist is available daily for medications, which is handy for families who want everything in one place. The facility is Medicare and Medicaid certified, and several agencies, including the Maryland Department of Health and the VA, inspect it every year to check that everything stays up to standard. There are also extra services like Infusion Services, Medical Supply, Home First program, an on-site pharmacy, and billing is made simpler through an online Skilled Nursing Payment Portal. Families can visit and stay in touch about their loved ones' care, and the staff strives to keep the environment safe, nurturing, and comfortable, focusing on high-quality and compassionate care for every resident. The staff includes both full-time and part-time contractors, along with full-time state employees, so veterans and their loved ones usually find someone's always there to help with whatever is needed as they go through the continuum of care that Charlotte Hall Veterans Home has set up for them.
