    Compassionate dementia care, highly recommended

I moved my mom (we called her Nana) with dementia into Darnestown Gardens after a recommendation from A Place for Mom and felt immediate relief. The staff - friendly, visible, loving and capable (the owner is a nurse with geriatrics experience) - tailored and accommodated her meals and were deeply empathetic, even tearful at her passing. She couldn't really join activities (I observed little activity time, though others enjoyed seated exercise), but the caring, understanding dementia care created cherished memories; I highly recommend this community to families.

    About Darnestown Garden

Darnestown Garden sits on a quiet 1.18-acre lot in the Gaithersburg area of Darnestown, Maryland, where a small group of up to five residents share a single-family home built in 1984, which has hardwood floors, a fireplace, and a fully updated kitchen, and what's different about it is how it keeps things homelike, with bright rooms, soft decorations, a finished basement, and a sunroom that brings in a lot of light for those who enjoy watching the seasons pass by, and around the house you'll find a peaceful garden, a deck, a pond with more than forty koi fish, and spaces for birdwatching, so people can enjoy the outdoors when they feel up to it. The community staff offer a broad range of personal care services every day of the week and all around the clock, including assisted living, memory care, nursing home services, home care, and short-term respite care for families who need a break, which means residents get help with things like bathing, dressing, moving from bed to chair, or remembering their medications, and there's also support for people who use walkers or wheelchairs or need wound care or rehabilitation, and the staff coordinate with doctors and handle medication management, which often gives families some peace of mind when loved ones need more support than they can provide at home.

The rooms come fully furnished and private, and with only five total residents, the staff can really know each person-especially those with memory loss or dementia-and the team includes people trained in helping with confusion, wandering, or special activities just for memory support, so people stay safer but still feel part of daily life. Meals are cooked with attention to special diets like diabetes or allergies and served in a shared dining room with flexible mealtimes, and there are scheduled activities for those who like to stay busy or social, plus gardening, daily walks on the paths, and transportation arranged for medical appointments or outings, so even in a small setting, people get choices. The whole property is set up for comfort and safety, with features like showers with benches and grab bars, non-skid mats in the bathrooms, wide doors for easy access, emergency alert systems, and laundry and housekeeping taken care of by the staff, and there's an electric water heater with central air conditioning and programmable thermostats, along with parking for families in a paved driveway, a carport, and an attached garage with a side entry.

Darnestown Garden holds a license through the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, which means it's checked for safe care standards, and services are offered in English, with staff who are known for treating people with kindness and respect, so even though not much is shared publicly about the home, people visiting will usually find a warm, quiet place that feels like a real home and where health needs and personal routines are met with patience and flexibility.
