    Warm, compassionate staff; highly recommended

I placed my mom here and overall I'm very pleased. The staff are warm, compassionate and go above and beyond - Activities Director Sharon and Chef Peter are exceptional - and the community feels clean, home-like and lively with music, painting, exercise and outings. Nursing, therapy and memory-care teams gave excellent, personalized attention and administration has noticeably improved under new leadership. There have been occasional communication/billing hiccups and weekends can feel under-staffed, so ask about staffing and policies, but we have real peace of mind and I'd highly recommend it.

    About Brookdale Potomac

Brookdale Potomac sits in a park-like setting in Potomac, Maryland, and offers care for seniors who need independent living, assisted living, memory care, or skilled nursing, so there's always a way to adjust care if needs change, and the place doesn't force anyone to leave just because health gets worse. The building has three stories with 104 senior apartments, each with large windows and wall-to-wall carpets, and they let residents decorate and paint their own rooms, plus there's the option to bring favorite furniture from home or use what's provided, and there's even a friendship suite for residents who like sharing. The apartments have easy-access bathrooms, kitchenettes with mini-fridges, and some suites have dens or even two bedrooms for more space. Brookdale Potomac uses secured memory care areas with their own safe building, and the community has computer alerts, bracelets, and staff always ready to help those who may wander or need more supervision, especially for folks with Alzheimer's disease or other types of dementia. The staff includes nurses, a doctor on call, and many friendly caregivers who are there all day and night, so help is never far away whether someone needs just a little support or more involved care like help with medications, incontinence, or transfers using assistive equipment.

The place has a full-time activity director organizing clubs, stretching classes, Tai Chi, yoga, karaoke, gardening, brain fitness, intergenerational activities, and even wine tasting, and there's always something going on, from trips to local museums and parks to devotional services both onsite and offsite, with transportation provided in an air-conditioned mini-bus or some parking for those who bring cars. Brookdale Potomac welcomes pets-dogs and cats-and the staff pitch in for chores and care, so residents get extra help with cleaning, bathing, and daily needs. Meals come from a restaurant-style dining room with big windows, set tables, and floral centerpieces, or residents can order room service or choose meals prepared for special diets such as low sodium or low sugar. The memory care building has its own bright kitchen space, and private and semi-private rooms are available, even studios suited for someone who wants a quiet spot to themselves. When it comes to health, there are in-house nurses, visiting dentists, podiatrists, physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, and hospice care when needed, so someone could get everything from diabetic care with insulin shots to total care for folks who are non-ambulatory or have major behavioral or medical needs, and staff have experience managing elopement risks, behavioral symptoms, and even those who act out physically sometimes.

Brookdale Potomac makes daily life comfortable with common spaces that have fireplaces, chairs, and tasteful decorations for relaxing or chatting; there's a beautician's station for hair and nails, wide hallways, lovely outdoor courtyards, therapy rooms with rehab equipment like exercise bikes and parallel bars, and Wi-Fi and internet throughout the property. Residents can age in place with peace of mind knowing the facility is licensed, staffed 24/7, and covered by a wandering-alert system and safety features like pull cords and grab bars in bathrooms. There are plenty of clubs and events, opportunities for community service, and art classes or outings to favorite spots like Hillwood Museum, National Gallery, and the Smithsonian museums. Because Brookdale is a continuing care retirement community, a person can move in when still pretty independent and stay while needing more help over time without losing the friends and routines they've built.
