    Clean, social, affordable independent living

I live here and overall I'm pleased: the buildings and apartments are immaculate and renovated, with bright common areas, nice kitchens, walk-in/accessible showers, and good security. Staff and the manager are welcoming and helpful, there are lots of activities, bus shuttles, a salon, exercise rooms and a library, and subsidies/HUD make it affordable. It's mostly independent living (not nursing/skilled care) and apartments are on the small side. A few residents have reported recurring odor or pest problems and occasional staffing gaps, so consider that, but I feel safe, social, and well supported.

    About B'nai B'rith Homecrest House

B'nai B'rith Homecrest House sits on ten landscaped acres in Silver Spring, Maryland, where folks can choose from semi-private apartments, single room units, studios, or one-bedroom apartments, and the place really does have that calm, lived-in feeling because they've been doing this since 1979, and even before that in other ways too, on a campus made up of the Stein, Moskowitz, and Edwards buildings, all aimed at helping seniors live well and comfortably. The community provides 277 senior apartments, with 42 offering personal care services, and each apartment has wall-to-wall carpeting, its own heat and air controls, a fully-equipped kitchen, grab bars in the bathrooms for safety, and a 24-hour monitored alert system which always helps in case of any problems. Homecrest welcomes seniors and persons with disabilities, regardless of faith or background, and offers both subsidized and market-rate apartments, helping folks with limited income-and they even help with housing support paperwork, which can be tough to figure out alone.

Here, residents live independently but get as much support as they need, whether with personal care, bathing, medication reminders, weekly housekeeping, or laundry, and there's always certified nursing staff and caregivers on site. You get a daily four-course kosher dinner prepared by chefs and meal planners in a restaurant-style dining room, with healthy and social meals, and being able to chat with neighbors is nice, especially when it's cold outside. The campus feels lively because there's always something to do-there are yoga or chair yoga classes, Wii bowling, shuffleboard, pool, dart board, drama club, choral group, college classes, writers' clubs, game nights, arts and crafts, bingo, sing-alongs, dance classes, birthday parties, movie screenings, current event groups, garden plots, and a greenhouse so anyone who likes gardening still can do it without much fuss, and the community van takes groups to shopping centers or local trips. The activities calendar stays full with educational lectures and music programs, and the place even has a resident musical group and offers in-house religious services for those who want to attend something calming or familiar.

There's a library with large print and audio books, a computer lab with printer access and Internet, an on-site store for basics, a fitness center with a trainer, walking paths, and plenty of common rooms for gatherings or just to watch TV. Haircuts, beard trims, laundry, and dry cleaning all happen right there on campus. In the Edwards building part of the campus people find a bit more personal care support, so anyone who starts needing a higher level of help doesn't have to worry about moving somewhere new. The staff includes a full-time Resident Services Manager and visiting doctors-dentists, podiatrists, and dermatologists-who come around, and regular blood pressure screenings help keep an eye on health. Homecrest House gives peace of mind with round-the-clock staff and a stable, quiet location, and the community keeps costs affordable for low-income folks by partnering with HUD and offering subsidies when people qualify. The sense of routine and engagement is strong here, and the pace is comfortable, with transportation for errands or outings, and the gardens, patios, and meeting rooms always available for a break from the indoors. It's a non-profit organization with a real focus on accessible care, serving anyone who's eligible, and it's known for having a caring staff and steady activities to keep hands and minds busy, whether someone wants to learn, make friends, try a new class, or simply age in place with dignity.
