    Superb therapy, terrible overall facility

I had a mixed experience: the rehab/therapy team (PT/OT) was superb and helped my loved one recover smoothly. However, management is chaotic and understaffed-aides are overworked, personal hygiene and meal service are often neglected, cleanliness is poor, and the facility is poor value. I witnessed untreated skin issues/bedsores, an unsupervised fall and a death; administration was unresponsive and allegedly covered up problems and mishandled paperwork. There are caring, attentive staff and good follow-up after discharge, but I cannot recommend this facility for long-term care.

    About Berkshire Place

Berkshire Place stands as a large senior living community with a long history, dating back to 1888, where folks have received skilled nursing and personal attention from dedicated staff in a safe, modern facility, always working to keep a close-knit, home-like feeling even though there are plenty of services and spaces available. The building itself, which got a new nursing center in 1963 and has modernized historic features, offers three floors that can accommodate up to 42 residents in private bedrooms with their own full baths and ceramic tile showers behind glass doors, plus individually controlled heating, air conditioning, and storage spaces, which does help a person feel more comfortable, and there's even elevator service to make moving around less of a chore for folks who need it.

The community follows a non-profit model with decision-making handled by local staff and guidance from a volunteer board made up of local business leaders and health care professionals, and Berkshire Place is owned and operated independently by Berkshire Retirement Home, which means they can focus resources on resident care and keep community ties strong, offering services for Assisted Living, Memory Care, Skilled Nursing, Nursing Home care, Independent Living, and even In-Home Care to help seniors stay independent whether they live at Berkshire Place or need support in their own homes. Medicare insurance is accepted and there's financial assistance available, which helps families manage costs, and the facility stays licensed as a Skilled Nursing Facility, boasting certified beds and skilled care with 12 to 16 hours of nursing services every day, a 24-hour call system, and constant supervision.

Rooms come with modern touches like all utilities included (even cable TV and WiFi), stone countertops, stainless steel appliances, induction cooktops, pedestal washers and dryers, and even reserved on-site parking, which is handy for people with cars; apartments range from spacious one-bedroom to two-bedroom layouts, and all residents-whether in assisted, independent, or nursing settings-get access to private bathrooms and updated finishes. The staff helps residents with daily needs like bathing, dressing, and taking medicine, proving that care is highly personal, and each resident gets a tailored care plan that changes with their health and comfort over time, making it easier to stay independent as needs change within the Continuing Care Retirement Community structure.

Dining at Berkshire Place means daily meals prepared by a professional chef using top-quality, locally sourced food, and they handle special diets for diabetes, allergies, and other needs with plenty of flexibility, and with restaurant-style dining, a dining room, and all-day meal service, folks have more control over when and what they eat, which matters as appetites shift with age and health. The list of amenities is long, including a fitness room, business room, movie theater, activity and arts rooms, music programs, a library, game room, an outdoor garden, spa, scheduled outdoor and indoor programs, and a range of social activities, with all these shared spaces making it easier for people to meet others and stay engaged.

Outside the doors, the surrounding neighborhood is lively, with medical offices, churches, dining, and recreation within walking distance, and on-site transport services help residents get around when needed. Berkshire Place also offers housekeeping, move-in help, regular laundry and dry-cleaning, concierge, and ongoing family support, adding up to a lot of help behind the scenes so seniors can focus on their own routines and connections. Folks with dementia or memory issues have specialized memory care programs, and residents needing recovery have both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services for physical, occupational, and speech therapy, seven days a week.

The facility has earned recognition, having been voted Best Long-Term Care by U.S. News & World Report from 2009 to 2022, though awards aren't everything, and what matters most here is the combination of long-term experience, small-setting personalized care, up-to-date medical support, a continuum of living options, and efforts to keep the environment both modern and welcoming, with a focus on community over profit.
