Chilton House Rest Home sits in a three-story old Captain's House right in the Plymouth Center neighborhood at 3 Chilton St, Plymouth, Massachusetts, and the building has a kind of quiet charm since it's been kept up well, with sun rooms and hardwood floors, and most of the 36 rooms are private or semi-private with direct bathroom access so everyone can have a little privacy when they want it. The Whyte family has owned and run the place for over 20 years, and there's always staff around, day and night, who are used to helping with things like moving from bed to wheelchair, medication reminders, or housekeeping, and they're good at creating a warm, family-like feeling that makes it seem more like a home than a hospital. Residents here get help with daily needs if they want it, like bathing or hygiene, but folks with some independence can manage on their own if they're able, and there are nurse and doctor visits coordinated every day for peace of mind. There's a registered dietitian looking after the food, making sure everyone gets meals that suit them, with a lovely dining room where folks gather to eat, plus a weekly hairdresser or barber coming in, and activities in the social and arts room that get people moving, talking, and staying sharp, and sometimes folks go out for devotional services or community events. For times when someone just needs a short break, respite care's available, and there's help for those needing hospice, diabetic support (for those managing their own insulin), and incontinence care, with reminders for restrooms when needed. Folks living there can expect laundry and dry cleaning services, Wi-Fi, guest parking, a salon, fitness center, a game room, and easy access to transportation when appointments come up, and you even see people enjoying the common areas, which are designed to promote both privacy and togetherness as needed. Chilton House Rest Home doesn't allow pets, but it does have cable TV, kitchens or kitchenettes in rooms, washers and dryers for personal laundry, and safety features like handicap accessibility and a sprinkler system. The place aims to give residents as much independence as they can handle while stepping in with support when needed, covering assisted living, independent living, Alzheimer's care, hospice, podiatry and ophthalmology, and therapy services, so every kind of need's looked after. There's no pool or outdoor amenities mentioned, but being right in a historical New England town, there's plenty nearby for folks who like to walk, shop, or check out local restaurants, and anyone considering calling this place home can come by to tour it and see if it feels right for them.

Waterfront location, clean but concerns
I chose River Bay Club for its great location by the waterfront park and proximity to shops and restaurants, and my husband likes it there. Inside it's clean, well-maintained with hardwood floors, rug runners, wall-mounted TVs and a homey cafeteria, and the staff seem capable of caring for advanced old age. That said, the plain exterior and hemmed-in back lawn give a traditional rest-home feel, stairs to the dining area are tough with a walker, and I've noticed grooming and cleanliness lapses (uncut nails, ear hair, some neglected/dirty spots) that worry me.
