Heron Manor is a non-profit senior living community for people aged 55 and older, where you'll find both independence and extra support when you need it, and the whole place is built to be wheelchair accessible with large bathrooms that have roll-in showers so staff can help out if needed, and the apartments are roomy, with one or two bedrooms, big kitchens, and living rooms, making it feel more like home than some of those old-fashioned facilities, and people enjoy their own space but can join neighbors in indoor and outdoor common rooms, an on-site library, or in community rooms that hold up to 65 people for bigger get-togethers. Heron Manor offers independent living, assisted living, and specialized memory care for folks with Alzheimer's or dementia, so if someone needs help with bathing, dressing, taking medicine, or more advanced care, the trained staff is around 24 hours a day, and they're always awake, which gives some peace of mind, and residents with diabetes can get insulin management and sliding scale therapy, while those who need help moving from bed to wheelchair can receive assistance with transfers. If people deal with incontinence but can manage it themselves, the staff will support them, and the community prefers folks needing light to medium care, though it also offers hospice support and lets people age in place as their needs change, which families appreciate because folks don't have to move out just when they need more support. Meals are home-cooked, nutritionally reviewed by a dietician, and the menu even includes vegetarian and kosher options, with residents able to add their ideas, and you can eat in a big communal dining room, have room service, or take part in special dining events; plus, all apartments have air conditioning and are barrier-free, so anyone using a wheelchair can get around inside or outside. There's a swimming pool and hot tub, fitness centers, nature trails with places to rest, a beauty salon, and outdoor spaces for gardening, as well as a program of activities with classes, religious gatherings both onsite and offsite, social events, and technology support for staying in touch or learning new things, and folks who smoke can do so outside. The staff works with nurses onsite, and visiting specialists such as podiatrists, physical, occupational, and speech therapists come regularly, and there's help arranging home care services as needed, whether it's simple companionship or more hands-on support, and with laundry rooms on each floor, things stay more convenient. Heron Manor has an income-based program, and its LEED "green" certification means it was built to environmental standards, which some people like, and there's plenty of transportation-complimentary rides, affordable options, wheelchair accessible transport, and the Rapid bus stop is just a quarter mile away on Leonard, or you can use Go!Bus for appointments and shopping trips. Families say the relationships here feel genuine, the atmosphere stays positive, and the staff always try to make life safer, easier, and more enjoyable, offering the kind of help and sense of community that lets people live with dignity while staying as independent as possible.

Bright LEED building, attentive staff
I toured with Pat and was impressed: a bright, newer LEED-certified building with apartment-style units (nice-sized, some wheelchair-accessible kitchens), large windows, beautiful grounds and pond, and a cheery, activity-rich community (cards, concerts, classes). Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and service was attentive. Be aware pricing can be misleading-rent seemed reasonable but many extras (assistance, itemized health charges, cable) add up-and it's not licensed for assisted living in Michigan. Downsides for me: limited dining (no dinner), meals didn't meet my dietary needs, no thermostat control (rooms got very hot), and laundry is self-serve. I'm considering adding my dad to the list.
