    Close-knit community, poor medication management

I live in this small 34-bed, close-knit community and truly value the compassionate staff, family-like care, great meals, clean housekeeping/laundry, plentiful activities (cards, weekly manis/pedis), spacious rooms, family dining room, chapel and beautiful courtyard. That said, medication management is disgusting and I've witnessed unprofessional, sometimes deceitful treatment of staff and residents that makes parts of the place feel depressing.

    About The Cortland Holland

The Cortland Holland in Holland, Michigan, stands as a single-story senior community meant for adults aged 55 and over, and folks can find a range of living options here like studio apartments, comfortable cottages, and private rooms that fall between about 306 and 436 square feet, so there's a size for most folks' needs, and every room comes with a private bathroom, high ceilings, big windows for natural light, and a small kitchenette if someone wants to keep snacks or make something light, and there's even carpeting except in the bathroom where there's vinyl flooring for easier cleaning. There are both independent and assisted living choices, and people here can also move to higher care services like skilled nursing, memory care, and what's called a Continuing Care Retirement Community, which lets someone stay in the same familiar place as their health needs change over time, and if anyone needs a stay just for a short time, like after a hospital visit or to give their caregiver a break, there's short-term respite care as well as hospice coordination when needed.

Ashlyn Postma, Managing Partner, leads with a focus on resident care, and the services here cover a lot, so people get help with daily activities like bathing or taking medication, along with 24-hour nursing, nursing home care, and health support for conditions like Alzheimer's and dementia, and there's a special program called Along The Journey that serves those needing memory care, plus a secure Memory Care Neighborhood for people with memory loss, Alzheimer's, or other forms of dementia. The place tries to keep everyone as independent as possible, so there's always support but people still make decisions about their own care, meals, and activities, and they can get diet consulting if they have special needs or just want to talk about eating healthier. The dining team serves three chef-prepared meals each day and snacks, and folks can get meals delivered to their room if they're feeling sick or their doctor says they should rest; residents also get to add their own input to the community cuisine, so meals fit the tastes of the people who live here.

The grounds have beautiful, landscaped walking paths and a courtyard, so residents can take a stroll, visit the community gardening spot, or just sit and enjoy the fresh air, and indoors there's a library, common rooms, a calendar full of events, spaces for fitness, and Wi-Fi/high-speed internet throughout for those who like to stay connected online. Housekeeping takes care of cleaning, and there's help with laundry and transportation, so getting to appointments or social outings isn't a hassle. The facility is handicap accessible and verified as fully licensed, and it's known for keeping a warm, caring environment with good communication among staff, families, and residents, using regular newsletters, bulletin boards, and reminders to keep everyone updated.

Residents can join in life enrichment programs that sometimes include fitness, music, games, book discussions, and social events or even more practical things like garden work, with most activities tailored to what the community wants each season or month, so people stay active and engaged. There's a focus on well-being, wellness, and having a say in how the day goes, and the mix of amenities like kitchenette rooms, community spaces, and planned activities means most folks find something that suits their lifestyle. The Cortland Holland aims to offer a comfortable, safe place for people who want to live as independently as possible, with a range of care and support options if needs ever change, and the atmosphere around the place stays steady, friendly, and welcoming for everyone who walks through the halls.
