New Jersey Firemen's Home sits on the historic Lathrop Estates in Boonton, New Jersey, and has served retired firemen and their families since 1898, so it's certainly got history behind it, and you can see that right away, especially with the two-story museum showing steamers, ornate hose carts, and fire trucks-it's 8,000 square feet and open daily for anyone interested. This facility helps residents with daily needs like transfers, bathing, and dressing, and provides care from a fully certified nursing staff, plus both a Medical Director and Director of Nursing are on hand, with a health care physician available five days a week, and there's always a 24-hour call system in case someone needs help right away. They've got independent living, assisted living, memory care, nursing home services, and continuing care, so people can get whatever level of help they need as things change. The staff includes a fully certified Dietitian and Dietary Manager, and meals are prepared every day, with special diets given attention, and the dining rooms allow for all-day meal service, plus snacks. Housekeeping and laundry are done for everyone, so that's just one less thing to worry about. Rooms come furnished and have a telephone included, and there are common spaces like an arts room and a well-stocked library, along with safe walking paths and gardens if people like being outside. There are plenty of ways to keep busy, with movie nights and scheduled events, a resident-run activities program, and a recreation director who's a certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. For folks coming from the fire service, there's a real sense of community, as this home is the only one in the state mainly focused on caring for men and women from that background and their families, and part of the admission process includes submitting documents from the applicant's fire company and medical certifications. Applications go through a careful monthly committee review, with guidance along the way, though there can be a wait for rooms or beds depending on availability, so punctual paperwork helps. People find they're close to hospitals and other healthcare services nearby, like Saint Clare's Hospital, and the place itself is kept clean with staff described as loyal and helpful, and the facility's well maintained with features designed to be easy to use, even if walking gets harder. They've got a Board of Managers and several dedicated committees to make sure things keep running smoothly, and you can even take a virtual tour to see it all in advance, which many people find handy these days.

Feels like home; kind staff
I feel at home here - full of great memories and family history. The staff are genuinely kind, brave and skilled: dedicated, patient, and always willing to help without seeking recognition. I feel safe - pandemic precautions were handled responsibly - and the men are well cared for and content; many say they like it. It's a nice home, though the food could use a stronger chef. As a retired New Jersey firefighter, I consider the team true heroes.
