    Caring staff but poor administration

My wife lives here and I’m torn: nursing and rehab staff are caring, COVID precautions were handled well, and housekeeping keeps rooms clean and residents well‑groomed. Communication and management are frustrating — staff can be difficult, I’ve seen a missed doctor’s appointment and unapproved meds given, and pricing became confusing after a takeover with transfers to regular pricing without clear notice. Food is terrible and quality has dropped; private rooms are pricey while shared rooms are common. There are decent activities (bingo, gardening, chair exercise, bean bag toss, nail care) and my wife is happy, but beware the administrative issues.

About Sombrillo Nursing & Rehabilitation Center

Sombrillo Nursing & Rehabilitation Center sits in the heart of Los Alamos, New Mexico, and overlooks Pueblo Canyon, so there's a nice view if you like watching the changing seasons, and all around you'll find a warm, relaxed atmosphere, where people stay either for a short while after a hospital visit or for longer if they need more support. The center can accommodate up to 64 residents and has private, furnished rooms with TVs and telephones, which does make stays feel homier, whether you're there just to recover or for an extended residence, and you'll see their team of Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, and specialists working 24 hours a day, every day, making sure no one goes without what they need, and all that care gets overseen by a licensed physician while therapists for physical, occupational, and speech needs come in as the doctor orders.

Sombrillo offers services for people who need help after surgery, for those recovering from strokes or orthopedic and cardiac events, and for anyone dealing with respiratory or neurological issues, and they provide palliative and supportive care as needed to ease pain or make life more comfortable, with special attention paid to wound care, pain management, diabetes, and complications that can arise with age or after hospitalization-plus you'll get infusion therapy like IV antibiotics if the doctor orders them. They have programs to help folks recover enough to return home safely, even working with Home Health and other resources to make sure transitions go well. If you need help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or getting your medicine right, their assisted living and skilled nursing services will cover that, too, with staff trained in dementia and Alzheimer's care in case that's needed.

The food menu is overseen by a certified dietitian and changed up often; they serve meals all day, and they'll make adjustments for food allergies, diabetes, or special faith-based diets, so no one's left out come mealtime, and the dining room is part of the big, shared living areas that also include a spacious garden, homelike lounges, community rooms, an arts room, walking paths, and even on-site aviaries and aquariums. They bring in hairdressers and barbers, and for people who like to socialize or stay active, the staff arranges movie nights, arts programs, and activities based on what residents like or can do, so there's usually something going on if you want company.

Safety matters too, so there are emergency alert systems, 24-hour supervision, call buttons, wheelchair access, and help for anyone who can't get around on their own; housekeeping, laundry, and transportation services come standard, and they handle all kinds of medication management. The recreation and social program is pretty varied, and social services staff help residents and families with transitions, arranging needed care or programs-plus there are events and educational workshops for families and community members.

Sombrillo is part of the Los Alamos Retirement Community (LARC), which is a nonprofit group, and membership in state health care associations shows they're keeping up with care standards and training. The facility takes Medicaid and Medicare, and has dedicated professionals and an administrator named David Lemons who oversees operations. You'll find a focus here on dignity, respect, and helping each person reach their best possible level of independence, with care that stretches from helping people get back on their feet to providing long-term support if needed, and nobody pretends it's perfect, but you do get a sense of commitment from the staff and a real effort to foster positive relationships and make each day feel meaningful, whether in recovery, long-term care, or in making this place feel a bit like home.
