    Good care overall, meals disappointing

My mom moved in a few months ago and overall it's a decent, well-run place — clean, secure, with constant maintenance, a generator, and responsive staff. 24-hour nursing, nurses who listen, on-site therapists and a social worker give me peace of mind; studios come furnished (or bring your own), meds are handled at the nurse station, and there’s laundry, mail/packages and doctor access. Activities (bingo, sing‑alongs, movies) happen floor-by-floor but are reduced since pre-COVID. Food has been a problem — it’s improving and there’s a food committee, but meals can be mediocre and my mom often won’t eat them.

About The New Jewish Home - University Ave.

The New Jewish Home - University Ave. is an assisted living community in the Bronx that offers modern, affordable housing for seniors who need some help to remain independent, and the building itself has 72 handicapped accessible studio apartments, each with a private bathroom and kitchenette, and there are also a few private and one-bedroom options for those who prefer them, and residents get three healthy meals a day served restaurant-style in a spacious dining room, along with snacks and drinks, plus weekly housekeeping, linen service, and access to an on-site laundry room, and every apartment connects to community spaces where people can socialize. The staff helps with daily activities like getting dressed or taking medicine, and there are on-site healthcare professionals, including nurses and physicians who visit regularly, with services like medication assistance and personal care, and Spanish-speaking staff are available too, which can be helpful for some. The community has a Wellness Center offering therapeutic recreation programs and a calendar full of monthly holiday and cultural events, with outings to local restaurants and transportation included, and residents often enjoy local parks and walking paths, since the neighborhood is diverse and lively, and there's also good access to places like the Bronx VA Medical Center, pharmacies, and cafes. The site is part of a larger system called Jewish Home Lifecare that operates other health and senior care programs around New York, so residents can get help if they need rehabilitation, skilled nursing, or adult day care, with special programs for orthopedic or cardiac needs located elsewhere in Manhattan or Westchester. The New Jewish Home - University Ave. has special programs for low-income and Medicaid-eligible seniors, generally those 62 and older, though people as young as 55 can qualify in some situations, and the application process involves a financial questionnaire, a personal interview, financial and medical checks, and a nurse assessment to make sure the right kind of support is available. There is the Solutions at Home program that can coordinate services like Geriatric Care Managers and Home Health Aides, and the whole community is designed to keep people active and independent, with 24-hour security and on-site nursing support if something happens at any time of day or night. The building is generally modern and well-maintained, and while there isn't a lot of extra information about unique features, many families appreciate the focus on health, safety, and giving seniors a supportive place to live within a connected care network.
