    Therapy helped, but systemic neglect

I left with mixed feelings: PT/OT helped me walk again and I was out in 10 days, and a few staff (N2 team, Suzanna, Linda) were caring and competent. But overall I saw systemic problems - chronic understaffing, missed/incorrect meds, long call-button delays, poor hygiene (soiled clothes/infreqent showers), bed-sore risks, and patients left in waste. Personal items and bank cards went missing and I witnessed theft and suspected drug use on shift; management tolerated misconduct and I experienced racist, accusatory supervisors. Food, housekeeping and rooms were old, often cold or dirty, and parts of the building had no air conditioning. Communication and rehab coordination were inconsistent, doctors didn't return calls, and the atmosphere felt neglectful more often than not. Because of these serious issues, I would not recommend sending a loved one here - do your homework first.

About Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center sits over in Scotia, NY, right near hospitals, doctors, pharmacies, and plenty of local events and activities, so residents get to stay close to the things that matter while having easy access to care, and sometimes the neighborhood schoolkids even come by for music or a holiday party which gives people something to look forward to. The center started in 1977 as a nonprofit, is part of the larger Baptist Health System, and today supports anywhere from 201 to 500 staff, which helps them offer skilled nursing, long-term care, short-term rehab, and specialized services like physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and even bariatric and palliative care for comfort and special health needs, and that's in addition to regular care from licensed nurses around the clock, so help is never far. With 180 beds, they can take care of folks with different health situations, whether someone needs extra help or is still pretty independent, and if somebody wants to stay busy, there's always something going on, from card games, gardening, sing-alongs, and discussion groups to intergenerational programs where the place might have kids in for a Christmas carol or costume parade, along with exercise sessions or church groups and even visits from therapy animals to break up the day. The center's philosophy is to act like an extension of home, and that's why they try to serve good meals planned by registered dietitians, provide perks like a salon, a library, cable television, and a gift shop, and keep up a friendly environment with staff who listen, so people can meet others and feel comfortable in their new community. Baptist Health Family Medical Care sits right inside, so residents don't have to travel for doctor's visits or check-ups, and if someone needs specialized care, the Homeward Bound Rehab unit offers therapy to help folks recover strength, plus there's outpatient therapy for those who only need treatment and then can leave for home afterward. The bariatric care unit has the right equipment and trained staff for heavier patients, and palliative care makes sure comfort and dignity get top priority for people dealing with tough health challenges. They've been handling long-term care for over 40 years, and by offering a range of services, therapies, and activities, the center aims to help people feel connected, safe, and as at home as possible.
