    Beautiful facility, pricey, inconsistent care

I placed my mom in the memory care and overall I'm grateful - the grounds and rooms are beautiful, many areas are spotless, activities are engaging, and most staff are kind, experienced, and genuinely caring. Communication, photo updates, on-site therapy and a family-like atmosphere gave me peace of mind. That said, it's very expensive (I wish they accepted Medicare/insurance), and I remain concerned about inconsistent staffing, overworked/undertrained employees, occasional care delays and at least one transportation/safety incident. If you can afford it and monitor care closely, it can be wonderful; otherwise proceed with caution.

About The Commons At Brightmore of Wilmington

The Commons at Brightmore of Wilmington sits on the edge of the city near state route 117, offering a calm setting with a goose pond, open walking trails, and both indoor and outdoor spaces where folks like to gather to chat or play games. You'll find rooms like the Lilac Private or Companion Studio and Lily Deluxe Suite, all with lots of space and nice closets; some are private, some you can share, all with accessible showers and emergency call systems. Residents can pick from studios, one-bedrooms, or two-bedroom units, plus there are options for short-term respite stays or hospice care if you need them. The Commons is known for its friendly staff who are always around, day and night, including nurses and aides who help with dressing, bathing, eating, and getting from bed to chair if that's needed, and if you need personal laundry or towel service the staff will take care of it, except dry cleaning since you need to manage that yourself. The community supports aging in place, so as care needs change, you can stay on campus and get higher-level help, from assisted living to memory care and skilled nursing. Seniors who have trouble walking, need wheelchair help, or have diabetes or incontinence (but can manage it on their own) can get support here, though, if you need insulin shots the staff can help track but not inject.

Meals are a highlight, with chef-prepared choices every day, including Southern favorites like fried chicken, collard greens, and pot roast, and meals are included to save time and money, with therapeutic diets available for special needs. The dining room is set up for restaurant-style service, and there's a private nourishment area if someone wants a snack or drink outside of mealtimes. There's always something going on, from bingo or arts and crafts to offsite trips into Wilmington and even walks around the grounds. Music, spiritual services, support groups, and educational programs are on the calendar, both on and off the property, so there's a steady stream of ways to get involved. The campus features include a swimming pool, hot tub, fitness center, cable TV, and strong Wi-Fi, along with a game room, arts and crafts room, family rooms, and secured memory care spaces called Paraklay Way and Azalea Hall, which are meant to help folks with Alzheimer's or dementia feel comfortable and safe. You'll notice an onsite beauty and barber shop, too, because getting a haircut or a little pampering can mean a lot. The Commons allows dogs and cats, and the walking paths make it easy to get outside.

There's transportation for medical visits and trips out, and resident parking if you've got your own car. Housekeeping and maintenance keep things tidy, and there's always support for day-to-day needs. The GEMMS Program focuses on keeping everyone as independent and involved as possible while maintaining dignity and safety, and care plans get updated to fit each person's abilities and needs. There's also the End of Life Care program for those facing serious illness, with support to keep them comfortable. Safety features are everywhere-from single-level living to state-of-the-art emergency systems. Brightmore has earned awards for its friendly staff, dining, and activity programs, and many visitors comment on how positive the atmosphere feels. Whether someone's looking for independent living, needs more support in assisted living, or requires memory care or skilled nursing, The Commons helps people live as comfortably as they can, keeping things simple, social, and safe.
