    Good memory care, some concerns

My mother lives in the small (18-resident) memory-care unit and overall I'm pleased - the staff is excellent, hardworking, friendly and responsive, the care quality is very good, and the bright, hotel-like facility with comfortable furnished apartments made move-in easy and reduced our worry. Activities are plentiful, staff give abundant personal attention, communication (nurses, doctor visits, pharmacy) is prompt, and the location is convenient. Concerns: occasional staff turnover in the memory unit, some administrative disorganization, inconsistent meals/quality, rooms and laundry aren't always cleaned properly (mix-ups/privacy issues), and pandemic/quarantine rules felt overly restrictive; there was also a troubling delay around end-of-life meds for one resident. Despite that, my family would choose this place again and would recommend it - just clarify cleaning/laundry and end-of-life policies up front.

    About Canoe Brook Assisted Living-Catoosa

Canoe Brook Assisted Living-Catoosa sits along historic Route 66 in Catoosa, Oklahoma, and you'll find that this place helps older adults with daily activities like bathing, dressing, transferring, and taking medicine, and the staff are always around if someone needs something, night or day. The community is good for folks who want to keep their independence but also might need help now and then, and it's made to be safe and welcoming, especially for people with memory problems like Alzheimer's or dementia, since they have a secure memory care neighborhood where the doors stay locked and there's always close supervision, plus bracelets and secured entry to help keep folks safe if they're prone to wandering.

The rooms are simple, with options for singles, studios, or setups with kitchenettes, and the building itself's designed for wheelchair users, with walk-in showers and no steps to trip on if someone uses a walker or chair. The staff at Canoe Brook make individual plans for people, since everyone's different, so a resident with memory issues gets a program just for them, and there's a LEGACY Program meant for sharing stories and favorite recipes so nobody's left out or forgotten, and you'll see nurses, aides, and even a doctor on call at all hours, which makes families feel more at ease. Meals are served in a restaurant-style dining room, and there's room service, special diets like vegetarian, kosher, or allergy-sensitive, and visiting family members can get a meal too, which is helpful if folks want to visit for lunch or dinner.

Canoe Brook's got a big focus on activities, so there's game rooms, arts and crafts, a library, and a TV lounge, and a friendly activity director plans bingo nights, gardening clubs, lectures, trips, and music times, and folks can go outside if they want, because there are outdoor patios and walking paths, even a place where smoking's allowed outside. They have free Wi-Fi, cable TV, and common fireplaces that make it cozy when the weather gets cold, and pets are allowed if the resident can care for them, since they understand that a cat or dog can help someone feel at home.

If a resident can't walk or has trouble getting around, the staff helps with lifts and transfers, plus, Canoe Brook doesn't turn away people just because they need more help, since their building lets people age in place and stay put as their needs increase, including when hospice care's needed, and respite stays if someone just needs a short stay. There's also a home care agency on-site, visiting nurses and therapists, an on-site pharmacy, haircuts, and beauty services, so almost everything can be taken care of without leaving. The property's kept tidy and clean, and the staff's friendly and known for helping out however they can, and families and residents say the food is especially good.

Canoe Brook isn't a big fancy place, but it's known for its caring team, the programs that help people with memory loss feel safe, and the mix of help and independence it gives to everyone who lives there, and because it's part of the local Chamber of Commerce and has won awards for both care and dining, folks looking for assisted living or memory care along Route 66 in Catoosa often check it out.
