    Caring staff, good food, lapses

I placed my mom here and we've been very pleased: the staff are warm, knowledgeable and genuinely caring, the building is bright, clean and homey, and the spacious studios, excellent meals (gluten-free options) and lots of activities keep residents engaged and happy. For years the care and communication were exemplary and families felt reassured. That said, I've seen some worrying lapses more recently - inconsistent cleaning, missed meds, and power/elevator outages - so I'd recommend this small, personalized community but advise confirming current staff stability and backup systems before committing.

    About Markam House

Markam House is a boutique senior living community in Portland, operated by Brighton Care Group and recognized by Assisted Living Magazine as one of the best in the city, and you know, it's set up for seniors who want independent living, assisted living, memory care, nursing, and even short-term or respite care, which covers a lot of different needs all under one roof, and the building itself sits near places like Lake Oswego, Capitol Hill Library, and several good hospitals like Legacy Good Samaritan and Providence, so getting to doctor's visits or local activities is pretty easy, and with easy access to Interstate 5, both residents and visiting family can come and go without much trouble, and the place feels peaceful, a bit like a quiet resort, with mature landscaping, grassy spots, and a courtyard plus a greenhouse where the gardening club meets so folks can grow things or just enjoy a walk outside, and pets are welcome here, adding a little more warmth, because a dog or a cat can make a space feel homier.

The apartments come in studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom layouts, all on two floors, with each one set up with a kitchenette, either a patio or big windows for more light, individual heat and air controls, an emergency response system, and space for both living and sleeping, and some apartments even have extra closets and private baths, so residents can keep their routines and have privacy, and they can cook if they want, but there's also a large dining room with elegant touches like a fireplace and big windows, plus a staffed community restaurant and café/bistro for meals and snacks, and if someone wants to eat with friends or family, there are private dining areas too.

Markam House includes a PrimeFit gym, a library, arts and crafts studio, piano for music gatherings, a beauty salon and barber shop, a business center with computers, Wi-Fi, and common areas where residents sit and talk, read, or do group activities, and you'll find a chapel, meeting rooms, and a lobby that feels welcoming, so people have spots throughout the day-whether that means joining an exercise class, joining in a book club, crafting, or attending services, and there's always something on the activities calendar, with regular recreational programs, entertainment, social events, and group outings, plus on-site options for gardening, fitness, and music.

For care, the staff has a reputation for being tenured and experienced, helping residents with their medication, dressing, bathing, and whenever needed, health maintenance or care coordination with outside services, and there's always regular reviews of each person's plan to see if they need more or less help, which helps folks feel known and looked after, and those who need memory or nursing care get extra specialized support, and they offer hospice, palliative, and even intermittent nursing services for those who may need this, plus help with eating, drinking, and other daily tasks like continence support, so no one slips through the cracks, and everything from communication help to mobility or showering assistance is part of how they deliver care at Markam House.

Residents get cleaning and housekeeping services, transportation to appointments or activities, concierge help for daily errands, safety check-ins, and emergency systems in each room, so support feels steady but not overwhelming, and privacy's respected, since everyone's needs and habits get noticed over time-plus if you've got specific dietary needs, the chef and team make sure meals fit those too.

Markam House focuses on creating a setting where residents are treated as individuals, where family members are welcome, and where the staff acts more like extended family, and the community is purpose-built for safety and comfort using Pacific Northwest-style design, which feels both modern and homey, and with its smaller size and intimate layout, folks can form real connections with each other, so even though it offers a lot of services, what stands out is the daily life-pets in the hallway, people meeting in the gardens, friends gathering in the lounge, and staff who know residents by name.
