Fair Havens is a senior care center in Hanover, PA, that's been around for a while, and while the building may be older, it's kept clean, organized, and in good shape, since they converted what used to be a church into a personal care home back in 2002 and even expanded it in 2017, so now it's a one-story property with 9,882 square feet, with rooms that include studios, semi-private, and two-bedroom options-enough to handle up to 40 residents, though there are 30 bedrooms between the private and shared ones. Staff at Fair Havens help residents with daily needs, from bathing and dressing to transfers and medication management, adapting care as health changes, which means folks with walkers and wheelchairs can stay involved and won't get left out; there's a nurse on staff and people awake and available 24 hours a day, and the call system lets residents get help fast when they need it, plus there are cameras installed throughout for safety and supervision. The place has a low caregiver-to-resident ratio, and volunteers often come in to help out, especially with the activity program-there's bingo, crafts, movement activities, church services twice a week, bible study, and something happening most days, so people can be social if they want, or enjoy some quiet time in the library or take a walk on the scenic paths, and there's a community garden too. Meals are made for everyone and there's a salon on-site for hair and grooming, laundry service, diabetic care for those who need it, and the staff provides both hospice and dementia care, plus temporary respite stays for folks recovering from illness or whose families need short-term help. Residents attend devotional services offsite when they wish, enjoy social events, and have indoor common areas for relaxing or seeing friends. The facility maintains paved parking for around 15 to 20 cars, runs on gas heat and central air, and uses public utilities for water and sewer; they also have a sprinkler system for safety. Care plans are personalized to match needs, and the staff aims to give each person respectful, attentive support while helping them keep their independence. The whole environment at Fair Havens feels welcoming, and even though no place is perfect, the staff work hard so seniors living there feel at home and safe.
Welcoming staff but safety concerns
I liked the welcoming, respectful staff, attentive care, clean well-maintained rooms and daily activities (bingo, crafts, Bible study) with volunteers who go above and beyond. That said, the building is older with dark hallways and lighting issues, I observed one caregiver for 19 residents, and there were safety hazards (ice on the sidewalk, torn carpet). I also witnessed the owner publicly reprimand and yell at staff/family, so I reported my concerns to the state.
