    Welcoming staff quality of life

I toured this community and felt immediately welcomed - the staff were professional, caring and learned residents' names and interests. The building is clean and homey, the sunny dining room serves nutritious, well-liked meals, and the activity team keeps a full, engaging calendar. Medical care and responsiveness impressed me, though I noted occasional staffing/communication hiccups and mixed reports about medication management and memory-care consistency. Overall I'd recommend it for quality of life and warm, attentive staff, but ask detailed questions about meds and weekend staffing.

    About Oaks at Charleston

Oaks at Charleston sits in West Ashley, just minutes from downtown Charleston, close to MUSC and Roper hospitals, and tucked away in an area with churches, shops, and restaurants nearby, so folks don't feel cut off from the world. The community offers assisted living, independent living, and memory care, all in a purpose-built, secured setting made with seniors' needs in mind, especially for those dealing with Alzheimer's or other types of dementia. The community's got private studios and one-bedroom apartments, all with private baths, microwaves, compact fridges, emergency pull cords, and grab bars, and folks can bring their own furniture and mementos to make it feel like home. The staff includes nurses, resident services with a long-time team, and a full-time activity director, with someone always around, day or night, for help with medication, bathing, dressing, moving around, or reminders to use the restroom, and specialized support for those with behavioral, psychiatric, or diabetes needs.

Oaks at Charleston allows both cats and dogs, and even songbirds, so residents don't have to part with their pets. They've got indoor and outdoor spaces like bright shared areas, a bistro, a beauty salon, fitness and wellness programs, a coffee shop, walking paths, porches with rocking chairs, activity rooms, a library, entertainment areas, and pretty courtyards with gardens and space for visits with family. There's also a BBQ deck and planters where residents who like to garden can help out, and the staff keeps maintenance, housekeeping, and laundry taken care of. Meals get served three times a day with snacks and drinks always available, and folks can pick what or when to eat with all-day and anytime dining. Special diets such as diabetic, gluten-free, low-sodium, kosher, vegetarian, and others can be accommodated in restaurant-style, private, or assisted living dining rooms.

The activities cover a lot to help you stay busy if you want-from stretching and fitness classes, art, cooking, and brain fitness, to music, karaoke, gardening, trivia, and outings. Residents can also join in devotional or religious services, sometimes held both in and out of the community, literary and educational activities, and even trips for shopping or doctor visits with scheduled transportation provided. The community's technology, like safety bracelets with alarms and full secured memory care neighborhoods, helps keep folks safe, especially those who might wander or who have major behavioral challenges. Physical, occupational, and speech therapies are available onsite through partnerships, and a dedicated medical director oversees things. Oaks at Charleston welcomes both short-term respite stays and long-term residents in a building designed for safety and comfort, with a no-smoking policy indoors and a $3,000 entry fee. The team focuses on honest, person-centered care that supports dignity, safety, and social connection, all while helping everyone feel as much at home as possible.
