    Lovely grounds, neglectful internal care

My experience was terrible: staff were often unreachable, phone lines busy, families weren't notified promptly in emergencies, and chronic understaffing meant long waits, promised rehab wasn't provided, handling was unsafe (not secured in a harness), my loved one couldn't be fed without family, I found ants and poor cleanliness, and a door was even shut during a choking incident. Overall I felt the care was neglectful and communication abysmal. The grounds are lovely-a magnificent, well-maintained tree and park offer a serene contrast to the inadequate care inside.

    About Island Oaks Living Center

Island Oaks Living Center sits under big live oak trees on Maybank Highway in Johns Island, SC, and offers different types of care for seniors. The facility has 132 beds and a high occupancy rate, usually with around 127 residents, and serves folks who need various levels of support, from independent living and assisted living to memory care and skilled nursing. Some people stay long-term while others need short-term care, including those recovering from surgery, illness, or injury, and it accepts both Medicare and Medicaid. There's help for primary caregivers too, with respite care providing breaks for families who need them and always aiming to keep residents comfortable and supported during their stay.

The center's known for its personal touch-staff members get to know residents by name, and there are both family and resident councils for more say in daily life. Skilled nursing care is always available, with 24-hour supervision and special services like physical, occupational, and speech therapy, plus wound care and rehabilitation plans. Assisted living options include help with things like bathing, dressing, medication management, meals, housekeeping, and laundry, while independent living residents get accessible apartments, a maintenance-free setup, and plenty of social activities. Folks with Alzheimer's or dementia receive specialized care in secure memory care areas designed to keep them safe and engaged, though it should be said this often costs more than regular healthcare and may be partly covered by certain programs. For people who don't need round-the-clock medical watching but can't live on their own, there's intermediate care focused on supporting independence as much as possible. For those who prefer to stay at home, there are home care services available with aides for companionship and help with daily needs.

Amenities generally include meal programs, laundry, housekeeping, organized activities, and other features to brighten residents' days, though some folks have mentioned the menu choices and portions could improve. Social programs are made to fit the interests of residents, with a Life Enrichment Director helping plan things to do. The facility is fully sprinklered and follows all safety and health codes for its license, keeping the place in good shape and maintaining the right staff-to-resident ratios. While Island Oaks Living Center isn't a continuing care retirement community or located inside a hospital, and is run as a for-profit corporation with multi-nursing home ownership, it does provide a full range of senior living services and support programs, including help with financial and insurance matters. The center's a practical choice for seniors in need of nursing care, assisted living, memory support, or independent living with a range of supportive services, and it aims to create a place where folks can feel at home while getting the help and attention they need.
