    Caring staff, serious safety failures

I adore the warm, southern-feel and the staff's genuine, loving care - they go above and beyond for dementia residents. But I'm seriously concerned about chronic short staffing (no 24/7 RN, only two at night, no housekeepers), a resident fall with a head injury that led to a state board fine, and management downplaying the need for around-the-clock nursing. Sleep is regularly disrupted by a poorly latched door by the trash area that slams in wind and was "fixed" with rocks/buckets - unacceptable. Because of these safety and maintenance failures, I cannot in good conscience recommend placing a loved one here, despite the amazing, devoted staff.

About Sundance Memory Care at Towne Lake

Sundance At Towne Lake offers a memory care community deeply rooted in the belief that every individual deserves to live a purposeful and fulfilling life, even in the face of memory loss. Residents at Sundance At Towne Lake are encouraged to embrace independence, make their own choices, and participate in community life as valued individuals. The environment is carefully crafted to uphold respect, dignity, and equality, supporting a sense of belonging for everyone who calls it home.

Central to the philosophy at Sundance At Towne Lake is the adoption of Montessori learning techniques, thoughtfully adapted for residents living with Alzheimer’s and various forms of dementia. This approach emphasizes a person-centered and education-focused environment, empowering residents through hands-on activities and encouraging them to maintain as much independence as possible. Residents are invited to engage in sensory-driven activities and collaborative interactions, including intergenerational experiences with children involved in the community, fostering ongoing opportunities for learning and engagement. Through these carefully structured activities, individuals can develop new skills, routines, and habits that enhance their well-being.

Customization is at the heart of care at Sundance At Towne Lake, as reflected in their S.T.O.R.Y. approach. Recognizing that each person’s life story is unique, the team considers residents’ strengths, interests, past occupations, and meaningful relationships when planning care. Upon arrival, new residents are welcomed not just as clients, but as individuals whose personal stories are integral to their daily experiences. Every team member is dedicated to learning these stories to better connect with and support each resident, nurturing relationships built on familiarity and trust.

The physical environment at Sundance At Towne Lake is prepared with intentional design elements that promote independence and comfort. Simple but meaningful cues, such as yellow signs placed within the line of sight, gently guide residents to care for themselves. The use of red plates is an innovative touch to address vision challenges, such as macular degeneration, commonly associated with memory loss, helping to maintain mealtime dignity and ease. Each apartment door is adorned with a distinct wreath, providing a familiar landmark that signals home to every resident and deepens their sense of comfort and identity.

Life at Sundance At Towne Lake centers around the idea of relational living. The caregiving team approaches their work not as a task to complete for the residents, but as a daily journey undertaken alongside them. This philosophy fosters a genuine sense of community, where team members and residents “do life” together, sharing in routines and celebrations alike. Family involvement is highly encouraged, with loved ones welcomed to join residents for meals and participate in the community’s monthly events, reinforcing the feeling of inclusion and connection.

Communication with families is an integral aspect of life at Sundance At Towne Lake. Families receive regular updates through newsletters, texts, and emails, ensuring they remain an active part of their loved one’s experience. The community is also passionate about expanding understanding and awareness of dementia, exemplified by initiatives such as their involvement with the Ally Bally Bee project, which introduces personalized educational materials for children about dementia.

Residents at Sundance At Towne Lake are invited to select activities that inspire them, fostering a sense of agency each day. The care team serves as gentle guides, supporting resident choices and promoting participation without ever presiding over their day-to-day lives. This approach allows each individual to experience autonomy, meaning, and joy within a vibrant and supportive environment.
