    Excellent rehab, poor care otherwise

I had a mixed experience: staff service and maintenance were poor, non-verbal residents seemed neglected, and meals often only had juice and tea with no water. On the upside, the rehabilitation program and therapies were excellent and helped me get my life back.

About Moody Neurorehabilitation Institute at TideWay

Moody Neurorehabilitation Institute at TideWay, located at 6444 Central City Blvd in Galveston, Texas, is a specialized facility that helps adults recover from brain injuries. The place sits on 3.5 acres just one block from the beach and has about 40,000 square feet of living and activity space with 32 beds, and you'll find it set up to feel like a home. Operated by TideWay and part of the Transitional Learning Center at Galveston, the institute's main goal is to bridge the gap between hospital life and going back home for people who finished their inpatient care but still need strong support. Staff offer care in a safe setting, designing personalized plans that cover physical, cognitive, and emotional recovery, and they take a team approach with professionals in neuropsychology, speech and language therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other services all working together.

The programs use evidence-based therapy and focus on helping patients relearn important life skills, with services like counseling, community integration, and vocational training. The Brain Injury Specialty Program and other services are set up for adults who survived a brain injury, whether from trauma or an illness, and they help people build the skills needed to live as independently as possible. There's inpatient and outpatient treatment available, so people can find the right fit depending on their needs. The care involves advanced technology such as Hocoma Locomat® for gait training, Armeo Power and Movao for motor therapy, MYRO by Tyromotion, and Bioness L300 Go®, H200, and Vector devices for functional and neuromuscular stimulation.

Patients get help with daily living skills, communication, swallowing issues, emotional changes, physical movement, and finding ways to get used to life again in the community, all through structured programs. The center also runs long-term supported living for clients who aren't able to live on their own after brain injury, so they've got options even when full independence is not possible. The campus includes amenities like dressing rooms and spaces for family to visit or take tours to help everyone make the best choices. Family accommodations are part of the support too, because loved ones matter in rehab.

Staff have experience and are trained to answer questions about the different therapies, programs, and what daily life is like. The center operates as a nonprofit, meaning they're focused on helping people over making money, and they've held CARF accreditation for years, which shows they follow high standards for rehab care. Moody Neurorehabilitation Institute has offered these services since 1982, with locations in Galveston, Lubbock, Houston, Clear Lake, and the Space Center area, and visitors can even take virtual tours. The facility aims to improve each patient's quality of life by giving comprehensive care, leading to many stories of patients getting back into work, volunteering, or simply enjoying more independence.
